I have a 74 charger with a 440... trying to figure out what the best initial timing and total timing would be for it.

Has a Holley Sniper EFI installed with 1" spacer
MSD 6al box, blaster 2 coil, distributor and MSD plug wires

Stealth Aluminum heads (440source)

Comp cams Part# 21-227-4...
Duration @ .050 Intake-231 Exhaust-237
Lobe lift Intake-.3510 Exhaust- .3510
Lobe separation 110.0

Patriot headers with dual exhaust x-pipe...

thanks for any help...

36 total, and initial will be what it'll be, until you tailor it. Luckily the msd dist is easy to curve

My 383/496 w Fitech n yadda yadda yadda likes 17° idle, less exhaust smell and idles cooler. Max timing will depend on fuel octane, compression, intake valve closing etc... run it, if it detonate, back it down. Otherwise go to a dyno.

Start low and creep up. Base timing is not so criticle, all in extremely criticle. Can you hear the engine over the exhaust? Spark knock can be heard if the exhaust is not too loud. I would start on the conservavtive side around 30° all in to begin with and see how the engine performs. step up a little at a time till the engine knocks or stops improving. Keeping the timing advance short is wise, get the all in timing close, then adjust the curve for your base at something under 20°.

Just noticed your thread about timing on your engine. My engine is a built by Muscle Motors 450 and has the same Comp cam as yours. I have a Fast EFI and Fast distributor.
The question I have is about the cam that has a really large amount of overlap. My engine runs good, but at idle is always super rich at the exhaust pipes. I have dialed down the fuel mixture (AFR) but the large overlap seems to create a false number for the EFI (oxygen sensor). Does your engine have the same rich condition? Numbers seem ok at higher engine speeds. I have increased idle speed to 1000 rpm and it seems to help a little.
Also at 20 degrees idle timing the engine always seems hard to start. Even broke several teeth off the flex plate. Starter is a Power Master mini spaced and positioned as close to perfect as I can. Seems to start poorly after setting a few weeks. Starts ok after warmed up.
Thanks for any information you might supply.
