Here we go. One last time...

Any other recommendations on a new clutch?
I think I've decided to wail on this old set of Hedmans in order to get them off the starter; that would be more prudent and gives me money to get a decent clutch, plus all the other little parts needed when one does this engine swap stuff.
You don't like my suggestion of Centerforce Dual Friction? IMO with your situation and how your car is equipped, you couldn't do better, but you could do a lot worse.................MO

Well CRAP!

This old transmission input housing has part number C94796.
That's the smaller 4.354" outside diameter/3.70" bolt circle, originally installed in 64-67 b-bodies, 64-75 a-bodies and 70-up small block e-bodies.
It's the WRONG DAMN TRANSMISSION!

Man, I hope to heck the hole in the bellhousing is bigger than that so I can replace this thing with a proper big block transmission!
I'll get under there and measure it tomorrow....
dammit.

There is hope, though. It looks like there's an imprint of the bellhousing hole on the front of this transmission and it sure looks bigger if that's what I'm seeing.
I don't know if this is your situation , but Brewers has a metal ring that goes around the outside of the bearing retainer ( input housing?) and adapts to fit the bellhouse hole that is slightly larger diameter. I am using that and it works great..Not sure on the years without looking at Brewers website catalog..............MO

A friend of good mine uses this one in his '72 Challenger with a stroked 440;

He says it is way better than the Centreforce, and easier to drive...no chatter etc. Just adding another couple o' cents

How many freak'in horsepower does he have??? over 500? Way overkill for the average street driven car. Of course he thinks it is superior if he paid that kind of money... I will put mine up against anybody in the same HP range for drivability...............................MO

Granted he is trying to wrangle 650+Ponies
But it is streetable, and you can virtually take off from idle in Top Gear.
Helps to have a roller cam and some trick heads.

Congrats on getting the tranny out. Thanks for taking the time to keep us up to date on the progress.

Gotta keep the wife outta the garage when you're doing things you aren't supposed to do. Haha
LOL
Bless her, she's gotten used to it over the years, at least as much as a person can I guess. She's seen some scary stuff up close with me (like the time the Ram fell on me and I became the jack stand :)) and has gotten pretty good at knowing when to stop what she's doing and check up on me over the years.
She asked me once how in the world I got away with such stuff.
All I could tell her was "God's got a sense of humor and I must amuse Him". :)

I'm still here too Ed! And learning about 4spds.

The only thing I can tell you about those mini starters is they make two different ratios. I bought a used Jeggs from a member on here and its one of the two that has more torque. I hear most guys buying the factory Dakota starters from the parts stores.

Be careful big guy!
Thanks KK. :)
I think in light of recent events, I'm just going to beat hell out of the Hedmans and keep the Dakota starter I have. It's worked flawlessly even with the header literally resting on it.

Following right along with everybody else, but my 45 year out of date knowledge is no help here. I wish my drive to get things done was what it was many years ago, but advancing age does take it toll. The other day I said it was a good day because my wife could find her greenhouse after the last snow melt so I thought I would send a picture. I will follow until smoke comes off of those tires Ed. That's some beautiful stuff right there, Bob. All my redneck construction projects are made of wood framing with metal skins. :)
Perfectly functional, but not as pretty for sure.
I do appreciate your support, my friend. The world could do with some more of the likes of you. :)

Woah nelly, I didn't say that! :)
Just being ignorant and wanting to hear options is all - all I know from clutches has always been "go to parts store, fetch whatever rebuilt they have, have flywheel turned, bolt crap back together" sort of stuff.
There's a whole world of knowledge out there I don't know on these things.
What I DO know is that Centerforce is a quality name - and I've never installed one. :)

That would make sense.
Apparently, though, it's sometimes not needed - lookit my situation, for example.
It appears the four mounting bolts located the transmission close enough to centered in the bellhousing for it all to work.
I'm still shaking my head over that. Apparently I didn't just have a mystery motor, but a mystery transmission as well!

It's all moot anyways. This transmission will not be going back in the car.
It has the usual wear issues - pops out of 2nd on deceleration, synchros grind going into 3rd, etc. - and now to find out it's a small block transmission!
Sheesh.

Yeah well, you fellas with too much expendible income have a party over there. :)
I have no such illusions of grandeur over here. You've heard this replacement engine run; safe to say, it's pretty much stock. Hey, I'm just happy to see it not smoking. :)

I am not too proud to admit a lighter clutch pedal would be a welcome relief after all these decades of Gold's Gym-like workouts on my left leg, though.
Might even talk the wife into driving it if that winds up being the case, although the manual steering and brakes are still probably turn-offs for her.

Man, I hope this freaking bellhousing is the right size....

You're at it bright and early. My fingers are crossed

Good morning BK. Yeah, been cursed with getting up at 3am ever since the cancer.
No idea why. Sigmund Freud would have a field day with me, I think. :)

Ok, so we know I had a mystery motor that turned out wonky. We now know I also have a mystery transmission that turned out to be wrong, wrong, wrong as well.
I couldn't wait, so....
I go out there this morning in my shorts (42F on the ridge this morning) to check the bellhousing, fearing the worst:

Ahhhhh. What a relief.
2892262 11" clutch A-833 1968 B-body C-body 383 440 4.80" IBR (cast dates include 9/5/67 10/20/67) Cast Iron
It's the RIGHT bellhousing.
Thank god for small miracles....

Brewer's says to use the 143 tooth 11" flywheel with this bellhousing.
Whatever flywheel I have now, I know it works with the Dakota starter that's on there.
Does anyone know/can confirm that the later model Mopar Dakota starters work with 143 tooth flywheels?

Ed are you saying the bearing retainer is smaller than the hole in the bell housing? I saw some where they make an adapter for that? Could be all wet on that, hope if a member knows yes or no they'll chime in.
EDIT
Guess you don't need this post.

No worries, Fran. Appreciate the effort. :)

Nobody has any advice or suggestions?
I remember this ( starters) being discussed in depth here, remember you can use the search window at the top of the page to find any keyword...
