How has SANDY effected you??

Down here in Maryland we consider ourselves lucky to have been spared the worst of the storm. Only a couple deaths attributed to the storm and aftermath. After seeing the photos of the destruction up north of here, I can only imagine the heartache and suffering going on in those densely populated areas. For those who would try to make light of the situation with an attempt at humor, I can only hope you never have to be in such a predicament.

The Red Cross is collecting, I heard the televised fundraiser raised over 23 million for the relief effort.

Thanks Ken, I should have known that part i guess, Sounds like there was a lot of help that went out, and were hoping things are starting to get back to normal after this mess, we just got a lot of hard wind but no damage here..

Agtree, Thats a great thing your doing!

My employer has loaned over 200 Linemen to help restore power. Most are working on Long Island. We get daily updates on working and weather conditions ..what a mess you guys are ealing with out there.
If you see any Xcel Energy trucks out there, give em thumbs up. They are a long way from home, sleeping on cots in a school gym.

Best of luck and prayers to those affected.

I'm workin on my 1st cup o joe, been workin 14 to 16 hour days pulling flood cars from the south shore.35 cars and no end in sight. There are THOUSANDS of flooded vehicles to be removed.:icon_puke_l:

we lost a section of fence, no power/heat for 6 days w/ 6 wk old twins..that was challenging..i live about 5 min away from Bayhead/Mantaloking..which was leveled..so i am very lucky to only be inconvenienced.

Yes we will be out to Long Island. Are there still al lot of trees on houses?

We were fortunate. 2 good size oaks hit the house pretty square, then just rolled off and onto the back deck. Zero damage - truly amazing. Our house is a bit wierd, geodesic dome, so it has unique structural properties to allow it to take those direct hits. Thank God for that. My parents house in Manahawken (on a lagoon) had the 1st floor flooded but the house is still there so we got off easy. We were planning on redoing the kitchen anyway, so nows the time.

Btw - my belvedere saved me and the neighbors from sitting on 4 hr gas lines. Filled her up before the storm and had plenty of gas for everyone's generators. (Ironic i'm the only one w out a generator, lol, but i'm a good team player).

We had no power and no running water w two small children for like 5 days. It's a pain in the *** for sure but we just had fires out back and bbqs w the neighbors and all pitched in for dinner, etc. was pretty fun if you exclude the 10 days of manual labor in cleanup etc.

A friend's aunt's house in Tom's River is now several blocks from where it belongs. I'd post pictures but honestly, I really dont want to think about it anymore, let alone look at it.

my thoughts exactly..it's like a bad break up w/ a girlfriend..just want the talking to stop and move on

Hurricane Ike was a similar storm in that it had a huge storm surge. I'm only 9 miles from Galveston Bay but it was far enough plus we were on the 'dry' side so there's wasn't much rain in my area. Galveston and Boliver penn didn't fare as well but Boliver was totally wiped out. Coastal and bay area were flooded 18 hours before the storm hit! And no need for pics because I know what it looks like all too well.

Most people don't have any idea what it's like to work storm damage on a utility crew. Long hours of hard, dangerous work in crappy conditions for weeks or sometimes months on end. I have much respect and admiration for the work these guys do. Not very many people have the strength or skills to get that kind of job done. Thank you.

Hows the clean up going & FEMA aid coming ?? just curious, are any local businesses back up & going ??, is most of the house electric & gas back ??, are you guys still having fuel rationing ??, does any of the Big Box Type Home Improvement stores helping at all, like Home Depot or Lowe's ?? again I'm just curious

I couldn't agree any more, we have lines down every winter from snow & trees taking them out, the many Line crews are always out there working many hrs of overtime every winter, hard work in adverse conditions/situations... I commend 69roadrunner & people like them, that come to the rescue of others in need... 2 thumbs up...

Restoring power

Well we started in baltimore, then philly, now the last five days we been in new jersey. 17 days of 16hr days in a row. Getting tired. Ran into a bunch of nice people out here, feel bad you were out of power so long, but as of today they told us it was down to1500 outages. Might be done tomorrow. We put tons of wire back up, replacing poles, climbing poles replacing services. Hope this never happens to you people out here again. We came from chicago, we got alot of people back on, just as well from all the other lineman that were out here. Hope to go home soon....god bless

Stay safe brother...I am up in Lake Hopatcong. ..crazy

Budnicks, the destruction varies from block to block and mile to mile. While the great majority of NJ towns are fine, others, like Mantaloking, which is a beachtown in NJ, are all but destroyed. I feel for the home owners and businessmen and women because it'll be a looong time before things come back. Dont worry, they'll rebuild, but it'll take some time.

heres a few pics of Mantaloking. There's a new inlet right through the town. Gonna be a while before that area rebuilds. I hear parts of the south tip of Long Beach Island just literally washed away. Not just the houses, the actual island.

My last 2 cars I pulled out of long beach got me stopped by an MTA cop.At 1st,he wanted me to put the car down and leave.I spoke with him and in a few minutes he just took my info and let me roll. But he gave me fair warning that the curfew will be enforced and no tow trucks after 6PM. Long Beach, the Rockaways, south Brooklyn in Sheepshead Bay,Brighten Beach and Coney Island flooded fast and deep. All of southern Nassau County from Hewlett, oceanside,Barnum Island east through freeport, merrick, bellmore, wantaugh, seaford, massapequa and east all got hit hard.
The desimastion was catastrophic:icon_sad:

the Army Core of Engineers have already plugged up the "new" inlet at the end of the Mantaloking bridge

yup
it is already closed up by the navy
they also almost have the bayside filled back in also..

i was in mantoloking today..
i'm supposed to get further south to normandy and monterey beach tomarrow where it is supposed to be the worst..
i saw things i could never imagine...
that inlet was not the only place that the water came over to the bay
the water was 5 feet deep for 15 hrs straight in some places..
the debris is everywhere
alot of destruction and loss
the amount of garbage could fill a landfill.
sand is piled up like snow drifts
very sad

yeah..the reason why they won't allow people back is because Route 35 is littered with sinkholes

speaking of
a sink hole about 20 feet long in a yard i saw had fish swimming around in it...
they are tearing up alot of rt 35
i bet they redo the whole run down to seaside
the smell is just horrible
it hits you right when you go past the national guard checkpoint
and doesn't go away
raw sewerage and debris is everywhere you could imagine
i even saw a dead rabbit in a tree...
it will take a long time before it comes back
