I think I may have just found my 68 Charger!

1. Get any non-operating gauges working (tic-toc-tac, oil guage, & alt)
2. Have engine looked at for ticking, possible get rid of the aftermarket oil pan if not needed and replace with a stock one.
3. Replace worn rear gears.

My advice is to address the engine tick immediately, but wait on the other items, I'd 'get to know the car' a bit before planning the expense and repair sheet.

Check oil PSI and determine if you have lifter noise. Try to take a few simple approaches yourself before starting the money flow.

You sound like myself in that you can turn a wrench, but not the best shade tree mechanic in the neighborhood. The inoperable gauges might be a simple fix, but the under dash aftermarket gauges are functional, so wait awhile. The rear end noise might be in need of a rebuild, but first just check the gear oil level. Pull all four wheels and check brake pads and shoes, repack bearings, look at front end components. Any leaks in the axle, wheel cylinders, etc?

In summary, spend a few weekends with the car. Drive it 20-30 miles off and on. Make a few notes here and there and collaborate with the experts on this forum. Don't rush any trips to a resto shop until you know yourself the car a bit better. You might find that there is more than you can chew, but you might also find that in a few weekends you have addressed a few issues yourself.

Probably not going to happen, but your could find this car is not for you. Fortunately, you did not throw much money into it and since it's a Charger you could recover the majority of your initial investment with a quick eBay exit.

I am looking forward to hearing more about the car and wish you the best!

the inspector visually caught most of what i was saying.
that car has an earl scheib paintjob, which will have to be removed.
noted the motors a diff color, its been into before.
noted all the diff colors, bolts and assorted clues.
noted what new buyer says about rearend...
noted engine noises needing repair.

to do this car right, theyll have to blow the whole car apart...
so itd be best to decide a good plan for the future.
otherwise, youll have a car sitting in pieces for quite some time.

so,in the end,was this a deal?
or did he buy a car he can drive?

because it seems like,if he goes fullbore resto,
hell have 50K in it when its done, for a 383 4 speed car...?
for a non NoM car.

"Not" a 4-speed car. Just clarifying. But except for that getting a '68 Charger is pretty damn good....

Congrats on your purchase, looks like a solid car needing some TLC.

Went to the bank 1st this this am and transferred the funds. Next step is getting the owner paid and my car flat bedded back to the appraisers storage facility and then to my house.

My insurance kicked in this am so I'm covered from this point on.

As soon as I have the title, I'm running over to the DMV & begin the registration process for Classic plates.

I've lost so much sleep in the past week and my mind is racing with thoughts, ideas, plans...etc... tough to settle in for the night. My eyes are also burning from all of the research I'm doing on my car.

Congratulations I'm particularly fond of 68's . Have fun with it enjoy what you bought work on it over time .
Best of all you've got something you can drive .
Check the engine first the rest can be done having a beer in the garage .

im a very very blunt type of guy...
and i dont sugarcoat anything...sometimes people think im mad,
but im not,im just being logical and sarcastic as well.

so im going to make a suggestion for you,
because i really dont like how this thread went at all.
i saw a ton of encouragement and not much sane rational examination of the car itself, and now you own it.

so,as soon as you get this car,
have one of the forum guys that lives near you Help you inspect this car.
based on what i think theyll find/say...

if you decide that restoration is not in the cards, financially,
do Not take that car apart at all in any way.
im reading some of your posts and its obvious you are fresh fish in this sea.
instead, fix all the mechanicals, and Drive the car.
dont be afraid to ask for help either.

if you decide to resell later,
then you will at least have a stable mech platform to impress buyers with.
this is only my opinion, and i dont mean to offend anyone.
most of all you Rebel.

For some reason you remind me of someone I once knew....

I don't disagree with your post but I will be shocked if the "sugarcoaters" stay quiet...

Rus, I'm a blunt, logical, sarcastic guy as well. I don't know you & you don't know me. I've been looking for a car online just about every day for over a year now. I wanted a car in this color (inside & out), engine size range (383 4bbl or 440 4bbl), center console, automatic, non-ac. I've done a lot of research, looked at a lot of cars (online + car shows), saw the price ranges, asked lots of questions here on this forum as well as car shows.

Based on what I saw + the price (my budget was 30K which I was more than comfortable with, anything up was going to need me to really think hard on it as I have 2 kids hitting driving age in the next 1-3 years and then college) the time had come for me to finally order an online inspection to see if this car met my needs. I got the inspection video, 100+ high res photos + a detailed report (that I shared here) that had no buyers emotion to it at all. I talked to the appraiser on the phone to go over everything. Based on the inspection I made my choice to buy the car, knowing full well what was in store. It came down to a logical decision to buy based on price as well as it was structurally sound and a good running car. I'm not looking for a #1 car. I wanted something that runs & looks good that I can work on with my boys that if the paint got scratched I wouldn't be too upset about.

I've done some work on cars back in the 80's (tune ups, breaks, pulling engines, some sanding...minor stuff). This isn't the 1st hobby I got into but it is the most expensive. I have no intention of selling this car but if the time comes, everything has resale value and I could make some money back, knowing full well that you never get back what you put into it.

I appreciate constructive criticism & certainly do not expect rainbows & unicorns but PLEASE do not turn this thread into a flame war. If you want a pissing match do it in PM's but not on MY thread.

good,so we are both going to understand then what im saying.

i care nothing at all for pissing wars flame wars or any of that nonsense.
if you looked at any that i was involved in,trying to get others calmed,
youd see i was the voice of reason and sanity there as well.

i cared that you were being led down the proverbial path right into the driver seat of this car.
i cared about your future with this particular car,in the condition its in.

Watched the video....Your inspector did a fantastic job! Well worth what you paid!

Keep us posted when it gets to the new home!

His inspection video convinced me to pull the trigger. I know it needs some TLC but at least I can be tearing up the road next weekend!

Looks like a good car, it's all there. You can move on to the the next chapter now. A good cleaning and detailing will go along way.

BTW - hope the owner threw in a pair of those Fila slides and white tube socks. That look might catch on.

Looks like a nice driver, you will have fun with it.
That test drive went right by my old house and I am only a few miles from there now.
