LIFTER assembly question

Hi all, I thought my engine had a tapping sound and decided to give a go on the lifters.

I removed all them, opened, cleaned, reassembled and submerged in oil and force it up and down to load it.

Put it back and sounded louder. Improved by the time I was driving but I don't think it made any difference in the end.

ANYWAY... questions are:

1- I put the plunger oil hole OPPOSITE to the body oil hole. Is that wrong? Should they be on the same side? Makes no difference?

2- When putting the lifters in the engine do I have to try to keep the oil hole in a specific position? (up, down)? I thing they rotate in there but...

Are any of the lifters damaged on the end that rides on the cam?
 
How did you make out? Just curious since I'm having a similar issue.
 
You should never pump the tappets up before installing. It can cause retainer to seal/guide collison or even valve to piston collision.

Really? Just put them back empty then? I did that once and the noise was insane until they all gilled up.
It was quite pleasant thought.
 
That's the same thing I did. Did replacing the lifters take care of the tapping noise?
I just cleaned them and put it back. Noise still there but using a stethoscope the engine sounds very quiet. I'm beting on exhaust gaskets now.
