Hello. This is my first post to this site since being on this forum for years. Usually I find what I'm looking for by searching archives but am coming up empty this time.

I have to show the vin matching the title in order to register my 1965 Dodge Coronet 500. Can any one tell me where an alternate vin number could be located? I have the tag on the door frame, but two of the stamped numbers are obscured by paint. I looked under the weather stripping on the drivers side trunk rail and cant find anything yet. I don't know exactly where to look and don't want to tears up all my watherstripping. The car has had a complete frame off restoration and everything went down to metal and repainted.

It's is a Saint Louis plant car.

Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Vin

If you have the fender tag, you can search underneath the rubber on top of the radiator support for the Sales Order number stamped into it. It should match the SO on the fender tag. I don't know if the VIN is stamped anywhere on the car. I think they did not stamp the VIN prior to 1969...

I don't think they stamped additional Vin's on a mopar that early. The early vin tags were embossed (at least on my 63).

Can't you carefully remove the paint from the tag and read the numbers?

Good luck!

I was hoping to avoid removing the paint on the tag, but It's looking like thats what I'll have to do.

Any recomendations on a good chemical remover to remove two stage ppg? I've never stripped this kind before. Anything I should look out for in particular?

Thanks for the responses.

First, I would carefully mask off the vin tag with the blue painters tape then with duct tape.

I'd try using a jell type paint remover applying carefully with a cue tip to see how it affects the paint. I don't think any other paint solvent such as lacquer thinner will affect it.

Good luck!

under the rear package tray

I have the interior out of my belvedere at the moment, and there is a 10 digit number on the rear package tray. I tried to decode it but its not a vin number.

I'll be using paint stripper this weekend and hopefully only removing paint from the tag.

Thanks for the help.

VINs weren't stamped into the body until 69 so it shouldn't be a VIN.

Disclaimer: I'm not that familair with stampings on a 65.
I don't have any reference pictures of a 65 stamping.
So the following is a WAG.....

The sales order numbers were stamped on the body during that era.
The 1965 SO number is eight characters long. It's a three character date code plus five numbers (don't be surprised of you find 08***)
If you add the year (5) and plant (?) to those eight numbers, you would get a string of 10 characters.

Compare the number you find on the package tray to the radiator and/or fender tag and see how it matches.

Thanks for all the replies, I went with the paint stripper, came out pretty good. The two numbers that were not raised were completly filled in, and if I tried to sand or something I am pretty sure I would have removed the numbers. Got the car registered Friday and was aproved for a new title.
