More proof Toyota's are junk

Funny you mention that. With Toyota, it's easy to tell. If the VIN begins with a J, it came over on the boat. If it begins with a number (usually 1) it was built here. And you know what? 99 times out of 100 it was the American made cars in for most of the warranty work when I was a Toyota mechanic. The Japanese cars were usually great.

You need to take into consideration that the quality of Japanese cars are different depending where they are built, The same can be said for all cars though if the car is built in a bad area the car will be crap, if the car is not built by the people the designed it, it will be not as good. This being said All manufactures make duds. The main thing i like to remember about the different car types is British Cars ALWAYS leak oil, European cars are always overpriced, Japanese car are always complex and American cars rust like there is no tomorrow. I have photos to prove all but the Europe claim this. But ask anyone with a bmw or merc how much a service costs and you see this is true

I had a brand new dodge 1500 quad cab that was the biggest piece of garbage ever. 30 k miles and it need two wheel bearings ,ball joints and joints?? At 60k miles it needed all those items again and the front axle ...I will never bye another dodge truck ever..and I will never bye any thing from government motors..

I can only speak from experience. My first car was a new '79 Plymouth Arrow GT (Mitsubishi Lancer Celeste). In the 5 yrs I owned it, I replaced the clutch 3 yrs in, otherwise just routine maintenance.
Traded it in in 1985 for a new Buick Park Ave with all the goodies. It was a $25K POS. I had brake problems multiple times, had battery problems, had rear suspension problems...
Got rid of it in '87 and got an '87 Mercury Cougar. Kept it for 10 yrs, and in that time had to change the water pump & the exhaust. Rest was routine maintenance.

Traded it in 1997 for a 1994 Mercedes C220. B2 piston in the tranny blew at 140K, and cost me $1300, and replaced a wiper relay. Rest was routine maintenance.

Got rid of the Benz in 2007 and got a 2004 Dodge Durango w/ Hemi. So far, I replaced the fuel pump 2 yrs ago. Otherwise routine maintenance.

I will never buy a GM vehicle again. My whole experience with them, from the salesman to service people, has completely soured me on their product to this day. I've had nothing but good experiences with Chrysler, Mercedes & Ford dealers when needed.

Mind you, today, I wouldn't buy a Ford, or a Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Audi, BMW and others just because I don't like the way they look.

At the end of the day, I don't give a rat's *** where the vehicle was built/ designed...

Give me a vehicle worth spending my money on, that is reliable and that looks nice to me. Make me want you, make me love you. Remember; "Car Company" who ever you may be, you are not selling me an appliance, you are selling me a vision, an idea, a hope, a dream.

Simply stop nickel & dimeing me to death. Stop letting the accountants rule. Let the designers & the engineers do what they are capable of doing. Then, and only then will you win my heart.

that is exactly why i chose a BMW. this is my third one, and as long as i can keep driving them Daily, i will.

i've driven a lot of other modern cars, and the BM is flat out the best engineered, most ballsy, most comfortable and most efficient all rolled up into one car out there IMHO.

4-year, 50,000 miles and $0 maintenance (even covers wipers!!)

it takes a helluva beating everyday! she takes it and asks for more!! 80mph throttle stomp, it will kick down two gears and by the time you look down, you're at 120. GOD i love this car!!! :icon_syda: lol

Be American, Buy American, Support America.
Or get out.
Toyota brought to you by fine folks who brought you Pearl Harbor. Go ahead drop by and see the oil still coming up from that hallowed grave site.
The first twin towers. We Will Never Forget.
It is shamefull how many have turned away and choose to forget

So everything you buy today is made in the USA? Really? Nothing in your house is made in China by Communist heathens? Geez. Give us a break. By your reasoning, we should boycott anything made in the UK too, since we had to fight for our independence from England hundreds of years ago. And how about the Civil War? Should I boycott buying anything from any state that was part of the CSA?

Yup..that's right Pabster. Nothing from south of the Mason Dixon for you. Your days of Jean Sweatpants, Moonpies and Tabasco Sauce are Over!!

2000 Tacoma has 170,000mi" knock on wood " reg maintenance. I beat the crap out of it and it is still running, ok. when I get gas or in a parking lot I have (on occasion) had people ask to buy it. I will drive this thing into the ground. BTW; I purchased it NEW in fall of 1999. over 13 years old. ........I will still never forget.....I think Americans build these,,,,,,,,,,,

I'm not a fan of Tabasco... but I DO dig Moon Pies. And Florida Orange Juice. And Georgia Peaches. And the TV show True Blood. And Oyster Po' Boys. And New Orleans Jazz Fest. Damn, this boycotting everything that somehow tarnishes America is tough! :)

Back to the original topic. I buy cars based on many factors, but where they're made isn't one of them. At this point, most major manufacturers have production facilities in the USA, and where the money goes at the end of the day is anyone's guess. Honda has always been my number one car brand, but like Toyota they're starting to slip. Doesn't matter to me- I never buy new cars and I base my choices on Consumer Reports reliability ratings, which have never let me down. I've never owned a "lemon", never gotten soaked on a car. But I've also never bought a car just because I wanted it, except for the car that I joined this board for. As a result, the only car that I've ever owned that has personality? My '74 Charger, which is a hell of a lot more interesting and unique than the Hondas/Acuras/Toyotas I've owned for 20 years.

Number of recalls is not the benchmark. I've taken my car in for recalls that were for potential problems, which did not affect my vehicle yet.

Reliability index, as in number of vehicles breaking down, is a much better indicator for whether a make is good or not.

http://news.consumerreports.org/car...r-reliability-survey-ford-continues-fall.html

Here is the problem I have with consumer reports: "The findings from Consumer Reports 2012 Annual Auto Survey are based on subscribers' experiences with 1.2 million vehicles."

In my opinion, I think the American public is now brain washed about the wonderful reliability of Japanese cars (especially Toyota and Honda), so they do not fairly evaluate them:
Example 1 "My Dodge Ram is a piece of crap. I have had it three years and I already had to replace the water pump and bring it in for two recalls. Worst piece of junk ever and I will never buy another."
Example 2 "My Toyota Tundra is great. I have had it three years and it only had one little issue with a water pump and two minor recalls that the dealer fixed for free. I love it.

In my made up examples, the only difference is perception. If everyone has great success with a Toyota and you go buy one, you will want to join the crowd and be one of the 'successful and smart' people too. God forbid: you don't want to be the only poor sucker who has a bad one. SO, when Consumer Reports comes knocking, the information the American public provides is biased based on that perception.

As I think we all know, the quality and longevity of the modern cars is way better than our old muscle cars. But to me, as satman said, it is all about the passion for a car. For me, you can't beat an old Mopar...:notworthy:

hsorman, you make a good point. I can say for sure that the Hondas I've owned over 20 years have been bulletproof... I've beaten the hell outta them and aside from routine maintenance, I've never had a problem. But trusting a bunch of other people's perceptions is a bit iffy. But on the other side of "I want to be like everyone else and like my Toyota", there's also the people that say "I spent $90K on this Jag, and it's a POS, but I'll be damned if I admit how crappy it is", and others who say "I only buy American, and the problems I have with my GM/Ford/Chrysler are no big deal because it's American made!"

The Consumer Reports data hasn't let me down yet, so that's what I go on. But buying a car is always a bit of a crapshoot...

Sounds really familiar to me, I had a 2500 Megacab and it looked really good sitting on the back of the tow truck. Biggest POS I have ever owned by far. I bought a Ford Raptor and love it.

But as far as Ram Trucks go, I've been thinking... Toyota pickups are more American than the Dodge trucks. Toyota is a Japanese owned company and the trucks are made in the USA. Dodge is an Italian owned company and the trucks are made in Mexico. Hmmm

Toyota is now the biggest car/pick-up seller in the world surpassing GM in 2012...

- - - Updated - - -

isn't amazing, that people that know the least about cars/pick-up or the mechanicals of them or don't do their own work on them ??, are the ones that argue the hardest about where you get your car from, POS that was so great for so many years, or the country of origin it's from, just to protect their own feeling...

Never mind I drive the truck that everyone loves to hate... the Honda Ridgeline. Bought it used for a great deal, since they don't sell very well. I don't do a lot of crazy hauling, so it's a perfect fit for me. The other day I had 30 bags of concrete in the bed, and my toddler in the back seat, driving in style. That's what it's for, and it's great. And it has a trunk under the bed with a drain plug... so you fill it with ice and beers and head out for the beach!
