My $300 a month budget 69 RR project (AKA, Wholly crap, what did I get myself into)

Here i thought that i was the only one with that problem! lol, Yea right.... lol My wife gos to the mail box every evening, i stay clear as there is never good news, always that Bill guy, i wish he would leave us alone for awhile, she comes in and tells me about Bills nothing but Bill, I wish he would get a girl friend and leave my wife alone ! :)

I have a different arrangement with my mailbox. First, I rarely get bills. They're automatically paid out, either from automatic bank withdrawal or to a credit card. Next, I order a lot of stuff online, and almost all of it is delivered by post. I get a constant inflow of car parts, electronics, tools...opening my mailbox is like opening a Christmas present every few days. :)

Nice job getting back on the road! Was going to ask for burnout pics but by the looks of your neighbor there wont be any. ha ha ha

(You in a lot of trouble boy...violation of city ordinance 11-14)

Hmmm... I wonder how much the fine is for a burnout... :jerk:

i'll bet he's done a few himself.....

He has... I have a few funny stories from talking to him. He's pretty cool..A couple of years back, I set off mortar style fireworks in the Culdesac and one was a dud (sorta). It shot only 10 ft in the air before exploding and threw clay shrapnel against all the houses, including his. He came out and said it sounded like somone fired buckshot at his garage door (it was LOUD). I was a little freaked out until he joined in while we sent a few more off!

Anyway, I won't push it, the car is loud enough to get a noise ordanence ticket just by reving it.

a buddy of mine is a Dept Sherriff, and it was weird the first ride i went with him.

She leaks!! Damn...So amongst some other mystery problems I'm trying to solve with the enigine, I left her outside for the first time in the 2 years I've owned her and it rainned like crazy... by the time I got home and went to put her in the garage, the carpet was soaked!!!! Top of the driveshaft hump was dry but the rest was wet, both front and back seat including under the front seats.

I spent last night towling and blowdrying the carpet and got it 80% dry... the thing that gets me is I have no idea where the water came in at.

Suspect areas.. small openings around the vent window, looks like the seal shrank over time.. seems unlikely that that much water would get in?

bottom of the front windshield channel has a small rusted out spot about .25" dia... possible? but again it was a lot water.

I've never had the dash fully out and don't know if I should be suspect of the cowl vent?

I'll replace the window seal and plug the small hole with some RTV until I can get to the metal work.. After that I suppose it's time to put a garden hose on it and figure out what's what.

Anyway...just another challenge, but I'm scratching my head on this one.

I had water in my car too - it came from rust around the rear window, but there are lots of places for it to come in.

Probably the only way to find out for sure is to let it dry and then hose the car down - only hose it down one small section at a time and keep checking for evidence of water inside. Do it slowly and systematically and you are sure to find the source(s) of the leak...

Good luck and hopefully it is something more simple to fix...

Thanks Will

Thanks Hawk... I'll try that. Just sucks.

most likely suspects are the seals for the wiper pivots. My '68 Charger used to pour water on my feet when out in the rain. Not too bad to replace. take out the radio and the glove box and decent acess. Might get a few dribbles from the vent windows, but not much.

Thanks Dave, I'll Make sure to check them. Luckily I've got the glove box and radio already out.

I am enjoying all your pictures, and trying to hold up my end of the bargain as well. This is what makes the site great, IMHO.

You car looks great, and you must be stoked to have it on the road! I am still quite a ways off before I will be able to drive mine, and I have no doubt that I will have setbacks along the way too. Keep your chin up with the water. Like Basket case suggested, wiper seals might very well be the culprit. Check it out and let us know what you find out...

:sSig_goodluck:

Also if the drain holes for the cowl are plugged rain can come in the dash vents.

Scott, your car is looking great! I truly love the orange with the black hood. You'll get your water leak issue figured out, easy enough. Happy 4th - lets see some pics of that mochine!

Really Nice.

Our old mercedes had a leak too. Water would collect inside the roof so every day after it rained, we would get in the car and the first time we went down a hill, we would get drenched. Not fun. :sad2:

Thanks John, when I was a teenager there was a guy in the neighborhood with an orange 69 RR with the black 440 hood. I always thought it was the meanest looking ride in town and I've wanted one ever since.

I think the only thing greater with our cars, is to have the very one we had when we were younger, Having the one that you wanted when a young buck is a close second! And you have one that fits the build with all the good looks that gos along with it! Now its time to enjoy it and something tells me one way or the other, you'll do that! :)

Got some time in on the RR over the weekend. Fixed a few nagging issues.

I've had a power drain that was discharging the bat that I couldn't locate, turned out it was a short coming from my gauge cluster...got that taken care of.

Also, I bought the wrong fuel gauge a long time ago, finally got that swapped out for a Chrysler style, but unfortunately it reads empty till I get to 5 gallons. Looks like the float is maybe set wrong. I'll deal with that later.

I swapped out the 6.5 power valve in my carb for a 3.5. I think it helped the idle tuning as I was running rich at idle and I'm only pulling 7" of vacuum. So far so good on the tuning seems to be running better.

Pulled of the useless pusher fan that was installed on the car, I disconnected it a while ago and it has just been interfering with the flow of the radiator. Hoping this solves my cooling probs.

To get the fan out, I had to remove the bumper which wasn't too bad getting it off, but I'm gonna need an extra set of hands to get it back on.

Replaced the headlight adjusting hardware, was kind of a pain and unfortunately/fortunately discovered that 2 of the headlamp retainer rings are busted. Need to replace before I can get that settled.

All in all, felt like a productive day.

Thanks Ron... My first car was a 69 Malibu and I wish I had another, still love the lines of that car...but that's for another forum.
