My GY8 '71 Road Runner

Great milestone. Once the body is painted and done, then it starts to get exciting because you can start bolting stuff on to it permanently!!!

Keep at it, you are about to turn the corner!

Chad,
I know you already sprayed your base and clear but FWIW (regarding gun pressure), I usually start with 20-25 psig (at the gun regulator) for base and 25-30 psig for clear. I also turn up the paint flow to the max, and the fan width to the max. My favorite spray gun likes 22 for base and 28 for clear. I run 90 psig on the compressor and then turn down the gun regulator to the pressure I want (done while spraying). When you release the trigger the gun regulator may show a slight rise. High dollar ones won't but the stuff I can afford will jump a few pounds. No big deal as you start spraying off panel anyways. Best of luck Sir

BTW, looks good!!!!

Thanks for the comments!

I appreciate the input Builderguy! I’m spraying with a Fujispray turbine (5 stage). I’m thinking when I was getting the fan/spray adjusted, I turned the flow out a bit when I meat to turn it down a bit..basically turned the knob the wrong way…like a knob!

I sprayed some more GY8. I got the engine bay, backsides of the front and rear valance’s, hood springs, battery tray and radiator support done. Next will be door jambs and interior.

Hello all, I got the interior, inside of doors, hood, trunk lid, header panel, fenders and door hinges painted. A lot of work and a lot of paint! I’m going to have to order another gallon of GY8, clear and epoxy to do the exterior.

Hood, trunk, doors, fenders, door hinges and a ton of bolts:

Trunk:

Interior (roof too):

I’ll be cover much of this with sound deadener (interior) and undercoating (fenders/cowl sides).

Thanks for looking!

I started blocking out my Road Runner. After scuffing the entire car with 180grit, I sprayed two healthy coats of SPI epoxy. I let that dry for a day and started applying the filler. I didn’t use any on the quarter panels as they look pretty good and I figured any defects would be fixed with the high build primer. After what felt like months of guide coating and sanding, in reality 9 days, I covered the car in two more coats of SPI epoxy primer. I let that dry overnight and then sprayed two heavy coats of SPI turbo highbuild primer. I’ll let this sit overnight and start guide coating and blocking again, yea!!

Thank you! It certainly has been a journey.

Progress; I blocked the high build with 220 grit. I then tapped down the highs and glazed the lows. I also sprayed more epoxy over any breakthroughs down to metal. I then sprayed three more coats of high build to start again…super!

I can’t wait to start sanding again!

Put it on….
Sand it off….

So worth it in the end. Been there got the t-shirt. Always had some amazing thoughts while in my own head while sanding. Wife has a video of me thinking I “was by myself” just arguing away with MYSELF.
“I told you this wasn’t the last blocking two blockings ago dumbo” literally said that to myself.

Haaa! I thought I was the only one! I’ve literally been talking, mostly yelling, at myself while doing this…”Slow down idiot”, “that was smart, dummy”, etc. And yes, this is a damn tedious process!! Especially when you see hundreds of dollars of filler and high build on the floor, ceiling, walls, in your ears, between your toes and burning your eyes.

That sh$t is funny right there. My wife catches me talking to myself all the timeb lol

Yup: Everytime you lay a coat on you figure it's the last one, except it isn't.
