I have a 1970 Superbird 440 automatic. I recently put a date correct factory intake on it with a valley pan with just rtv and no gaskets. I also Put a correct 4738 carter avs carb that was restored by harms automotive in spokane valley washington. The question i have is i installed the items correctly but the car will not start. When it tries to start it revs high and shuts off. It also backfired through the carb. When i pulled the old intake off the was running and i did not change the timing. Any help will appreciated.
Thank you in advanced

I am assuming you are refering to the paper gaskets, with an iron intake you don't use them. Was the carb put on before or after the intake ?

I agree with 62max. No need for the extra gaskets. Valley pan is fine by itself.
If no vacuum leak is found, advance your timing a little.

The carb was put on after the intake. I replace them both earlier this week

It's done,
It's not worth fixing, no... not at all.

Sorry for the bad news man.

I'll give you $35K cash for it and I'll take it off your hands for you okay?

easy way to check for vac leak is to wire the choke closed and start the car.if it runs ok you got a vac leak.check for simple stuff as well, stuck throttle plates(primary or secondary).make sure the weighted butterfly isnt stuck open inside the secondarys as well.what settings did you use on the mixture and idle speed screws?

I had harms automotive restore the carb. Did an excellent job. They ran it on there mule engine. What would be a good start with the settings?

Wrong answer lol. Wife and kids go with it

Another easy way to test for a vacuum leak is to get some carb cleaner and spray around your intake or anywhere you suspect a leak. Car will start bogging if you have a leak. Although not much good if the car will not start. Advance that timing and give it a try.

Backfire through carb is also a sign of being too retarded on timing.

Just do a small nudge at a time.

If you are using the thin carb base gasket and have the correct choke assembly, that is your problem. The 70 intake uses the 1/4" thick gasket. If you look.you'll see that the throttle shaft housing is resting on top of the choke and the carb is not flush on the intake. Also, check the front mounting ear on the carb,if you over tighten the bolts and it is resting on the choke housing you will crack the base at the front ear, just repaired two for that exact problem.

Thank you. I have been doing research today and it has the wrong gasket. I will buy one tommorow. Thank you getting back with me.
