Oil recommendation

If the engine has a lot of mileage, go one step thicker in viscosity.

I use 20W60 with a huge amount of zinc in it. 80 pounds of oil pressure at idle!!!
I had mine from a private custom oil shop. My engine really loves it

I ran a couple quarts of 20w-50 and saw more metal on my magnet. No more for me. It was the same vr1 as the 10w-30 that was the other quarts. I thought it’d give some more hot weather protection, but I think it just robbed parts of oil on cold starts. My theory anyway.

I ended up going with VR1 10w30 because of availability. My local auto parts store carries it. I believe thinner is better than thicker so definitely wouldn't use 20w50 and I am definitely not an Amsoil fan.

According to the filter study, the Baldwin flowed better than the Wix and had better filtration. That's not to say that the Wix is not a good filter.
I run both street car and race motor engines. VR1 10-30 is my choice. Proven in endurance races. Oil cooler is required for endurance.
Have run AMSoil,Driven and Penn. Good oils for engines not extreme stressed.
Prefer the Driven lubricants in my drivetrain.

VR1 10-30 is a great choice for most older engines and it's usually readily available. I have had good luck with WIX filters and there are others that are good as well.

The Super Tech filters from Wally World are actually a quality piece. They just don't make as many numbers as the bigger filter companies. In fact, the Super Tech oil is decent stuff also. I run it in my beaters.

The one to stay away from is FRAM. I don't like the orange filters at all...

I agree. I've had several bad experiences with fram filters in other vehicles. I actually have been very pleased with Mopar filters.

I put on a mopar filter and my vr1 turned black quickly. Put a wix back on and it went back to staying clean.

Baldwin made awesome filters thirty years ago when we ran a fleet. Haven’t bought one in 25 years or more though. Probably would if it were convenient or I start having trouble with what I use.

I run VR1 straight 30 in the winter and straight 40 in the summer in my 400 with 140k miles, it likes it. No cold start issues, builds 80 pounds idling cold and 20 idling hot. From my experience 10w30 is too thin for a stock big block, the oil pressure drops to 0 on hard launches when it's too warm and thin. I think the ideal year round oil would be a 10w40 but they don't sell one with high zinc locally or cheaply on rockauto.

I run whatever is on sale 10W30 conventional. Nothing fancy except in the race car.
