I've got a 67 satellite with 383. Was a one wheel wonder, put in a 323 posi. Now when I take off from a dead stop, the rear end bangs like it just shifted out of place. Nothing appears to have moved. Is there something in the rear end that's out of adjustment? Thanks for any help

Does it have a pinion snubber? Also take a look to make sure the drive shaft isn't banging against the tunnel. It's ok for the snubber to hit the pad tho. If that's happening, sounds like you need more or better spring....

are you possitive its banging in the rear i had a bmw with a sealed tranny that would bang and it felt and sounded like it was in the rear it turned out to be the sealed tranny was low on fluid. filled it problem gone and i was certian that it was the rear end making the noise

I think Cranky might be right. Most (not all) of the 60's rears (particularly the 8-3/4") had a pinion snubber, and when the rear leaf springs are weak (flattened out) the pinion snubber will hit, and sometimes hit hard. The snubber is on a plate bolted to the pumpkin that sits out above the rear U-joint. It has a small rubber bump pad on top. There is a flat metal plate on the chassis above this bump pad. Look at that plate, and if there's a shiny area just above the bump pad, then the snubber has been hitting. That will make a bang (or more like a thumping sound), often loudly. The fix is new springs, which most of these cars need anyway.

Two other possibilities come to mind. You said that you just changed gears. If you have too much clearance between the ring and pinion, it will bang from a dead stop, or when going into reverse, but that much clearance will also usually cause noise when crusing. Fix is adjustment. Also, a bad rear U-joint will often cause such noise. grab the rear of the driveshaft and try to jerk it around. If you see movement in the joint, it's dead.

One last thing. Check your trans mount. Instead of just spinning one wheel, the tires are starting to bite. Now some of that torque is starting to back-feed into the drivetrain. Blew 2 of them apart in my Camaro before I went with a poly-urethane one

I had the same thing with the 64 about a year ago, the noise was very loud and harsh.....I could actually feel it through the floor.
The thing is,it just turned up out of the blue....... I replaced the trans mount, checked bolts all over the place, checked for subframe separation, uni joint......you name it.
I should mention, the noise definatley came from the back of the car and the harsh banging through the floor was under foot....not around the trans tunnel.

And the answer was........my rear springs don't have insulators,I'd noticed the rub mark on the underside of one of the leaves.....nothing unusual there.
At a loss and with nothing to lose, I jacked the car up and with the load off the spring I drove a wedge (large screwdriver actually) between the offending leaves and pushed some grease into the gap with my finger.

The result.....noise was gone and still hasn't returned.
In over 20 years of working in the Motor Industry, I'd never heard a noise like that comming from a leaf spring.
As I said earlier I was grasping at straws by the time I tried the grease trick.....but it worked.
Oh, I should also mention the Polara made the noise under very light acceleration, it was that bad I wasn't game to stand on it.
Sorry about the long winded rant.....but I hope it helps.

oops.....one other thing, mine did it when it shifted from 1st to 2nd.
