I just rebuilt my single barrel Holley. My first time! However when I took it apart it didn't have the pump diaphragm spring. It is possible it shot out when I took off the main well. But I didn't notice it.

Is it possible that it was running without it?

I went to the local parts store and picked up a box of secondary diaphragm springs made to fit holleys. I have no idea if these are the correct ones but they are various sizes and one seems to be about the right size.

What happens if it's not correct and is there some measurement out there to tell me otherwise?

Thanks for any help!

Funny question, is it a one barrel Holley or a 4 barrel Holley? If 4 barrel the pump spring is located with at the end blocks under the pump. The vacuum secondary spring is under a cover bolted to main body. If one barrel Holley, I have NO idea. If 2 barrel, then it depends on if factory or aftermarket. Aftermarket looks like the 4 barrel setup, on only one side.

Its a one barrel. I'm not sure what has been done to it. It was my grandpas original 64 car but my uncle was a bit of a hotrodder and rebuilt it in the 70's. Unfortunately he's not around anymore to ask what he did to it. My gramps gave me the car,
It ran well for a while but then i stopped driving it for about two months. And it would die as it warmed up.
It seems to be running fine now with the rebuild. There was a lot of crap in there, it looked like sand, i can only guess thats the stuff that accumulated from modern gasoline? I don't if there will be long term affects if that is not the correct spring though.

According to the diagram its called the pump return spring.
