I was able to change mine from underneath on my 70 Roadrunner by removing ashtray reciever and removing defroster hose. I then removed washer spray button first so I could get to wiper switch easier. I worked from underneath, but looked thru ashtray area. I used a long Phillips screwdriver, it was cramped, but doable. I have a starter screwdriver that holds the screw, which helped on install. This was easier for me than removing dash bezel.
I agree with beebest when i did mine i did something similar the only thing i did was removed the screws in the switch panel to let it come a little bit out to gain some room but my panel would not come all the way out with out forcing it so i pulled it out as far as i could safely and blocked it there to give me more room to work on the back side then i did like beebest did and installed from the back by going under the dash.
