Has anyone ever ground a groove in them to let more oil come out? I’m thinking of doing this cause I’m not seeing A LOT of oil between them, rockers (Erson ductile iron) and the separating spring.

I have oil coming out of holes for the top and adjuster, but I’d like to see a tad bit more.

are your shafts banana groved?
Have you thought about plugging (set screw ) in the top and drilling the body under the adjuster for the adjuster and pushrod and rocker shaft for the stem tip/ pad

Shafts are 440Source, they have 2 holes (top/bottom) for oiling. The rockers have 2 holes, 1 for the adjuster/push rod and the other for the rocker tip/valve spring.

Which rocker are you running? I didn't have good luck with the 440 Source shafts w/iron adjustables. Seems Like the top hole lets too much oil away from the load point, bottom of the rocker. I think they're just intended for Sources roller rockers.

I’m using Erson ductile iron rockers.

I chose to switch my shafts to the standard style with banana cuts. That worked well with my iron rockers in the past, Source shafts galled the iron rockers quickly. The top & bottom holes make sense to me with rollers.

Looks like Hughes is the way to go since they have the shafts with banana grooves.

You're talking about grooving the spacers - I can't see the point. The oil comes out under the rocker and seeps out the sides. With a minimum .015 gap between rockers and spacers all the oil should be seeping out that gap - not going into the spacer. So grooving the spacer is pointless.

Grooving the shaft on about a 15 degree angle across the oil hole
Deep Case hardened shafts with roller fulcrum rockers
Deep Case or Industrial hard triple plated chrome for iron
bushed are better (ID hone Iron or Bush)

I don’t have that .015 gap, that’s why I thought I’d ask about grooving the spacers. I’m ordering new shafts from Hughes on Monday. I’ll sort out the spacers to get that .015 minimum spacing.

The 440 Source spacers & hold downs worked with my Crane iron rockers, but you'll still need the shims to get the side clearance correct. Don't see how grooving the spacers gains anything.

Just wanted to see more oil up top. That would allow oil to come out easier and be more plentiful.

I’ll give them a buzz.

"more oil up top" will not be affected by grooving spacers. In fact, its usually desirable to have less oil up top BUT have it in the right places. Up top you want the rockers lubricated, the pushrods lubed and you want oil spray on the springs to cool them. The valve tip will be lubed by oil spray from everything else. That's it. More oil up top means less in the bottom end - where you REALLY want it. Also keep in mind that any additional flow results in lower pressure - probably not a huge drop in a case such as this but its worth noting.

It’s all so confusing, lol! I have oil up top, would like to see a bit more. Old timer told me “if its wet up top, you have enough oil”. So maybe I should move on and not worry about it.

You remember this thread? I'm not worried.

Here's my 440 Crane ductal setup. I'm pretty sure I bought the spacers and shims from Summit. I got the .015 between them useing the shims. After all was done, the rockers were centered with the same amount of shims. You do have to trim the hold downs to your liking. The thing with the Cranes, there is a slight difference between them. One might center in one location better than another. Took some time sorting them out but I'm like it better than the springs between them.

I do remember it. I have a spring between the rockers and spacers on the outside of them. Just thought it wouldn’t hurt to have a bit more oil coming out the sides of them.
