I use WD40. It's a solvent, so it lubes the gasket when you install it, then dries up. Never had any problems.

I saw in another post that someone used a light coat of vaseline on their filler tube grommet. Would this be ok for the rubber gasket?

Vaseline can be harmful to rubber. Long term it can degrade the quality of the rubber gasket leading to leakage.

As @dadsbee says above - KY Jelly is the best - it is designed for maximum slippage but will not harm rubber, and it pretty much dissipates after a while.

Vaseline is also useful on new door rubbers - apply a thin coat to the rubber, close the door for a day or two, then wipe off the Vaseline. The rubber would have softened up, but it won't deteriorate any further.

An original lock ring, not reproduction, can make all the difference. Worth trying to source one.
