Runs really good till 4000 RPM

Some news. I put it back together with the sloppy oil pump shaft and since I had the new points and condenser I installed them now. Setting the dwell between 30 and 34 is a royal pain, something that I now fondly remember from the old days. Reset the timing and adjusted the fuel mixture, then went for a ride. It will pull right to 5000 RPM with no backfiring or stumbling.

The new points have much more spring pressure than the old ones did. Something to consider, as the points wear and the contacts become closer together the dwell value reduces. I set the dwell to the high end of the range at 34.

Good call on the points being the problem guys.

You did lube the distributor lobes? If not the points block will not last long.

Just a little hint...did the new point set come with a felt 'wiper'? Bet you remember those, and they help keeping lube on the cam.

Point float is a pia you have to have good spring tension on the points at that rpm at least 20. Most of the new ones are junk under 20. Had some that were around 14. They went to the scrap pail.
