Sadly, think this problem is going to get worse before it gets better (hoping better is somewhere on the horizon someday). One stat I read says 10,000 boomers reach age 65 each day. More, however, are retiring earlier, some of which is related to the pandemic. Another stat indicated that about 27 million boomers (as of 3rd qtr 2020) are retired…3.2 million retired btw 2019 and 2020. What’s this say about replacing these folks…when I have been hearing about doing so being a bitch for the past 10 years as the first wave of boomers hit retirement age? Add…the complaints often were finding qualified people. Before the pandemic there were reportedly over 4 million jobs open – vacant unable to be filled by qualified workers. Today the complaint is finding someone that can still fog up a mirror.
What has been the priority with many schools…including the one I attended in the past couple years? Well it was forming committees, printing/mailing flyers, meetings to rename the school or their mascot! This is in GD, so no further expounding. However, our schools and communities and such, should start building career paths to fill the technical/trade jobs as a major priority. Get this going with kids in high-school and middle schools. Even ‘at risk’ youth in inner-city schools to entice them toward great jobs that will earn them a nice living. Every community and school should be working on this…we should be hearing about it in the news daily across the country. The typical curriculum needs to change. At one time the USA ranked number one in education…today it’s around 25! Wow, there are 24 nations that are ahead of the USA?
Yeah, deeper issues in this mix…but get kids on a good start when the time is ripe for this in their lives…MO
