so, was the "Mopar Inheritance" a scam?

And just who here has all that extra time on their hands???

Those threads always turn to crap - there's always a guy or two swooping in like vultures to pick the bones without posting anything. Is that what we want?

The rules were crated for good reasons - we are not here to argue them, we are here to help keep things in line with those rules.
Agree with reservations.
I'd much rather have my loved ones benifit from my
obsessions. Not some buzzard swooping in to take
advantage of ones lack of expertise.

Sounds like the potential for this to turn into a monster problem is a real stretch of "what if's". If it really might be a problem (I admit I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes) I propose three simple rules for a WIW section:

1. Make the WIW section available to Gold Members only. That should eliminate scammers and people joining FBBO just to clutter up the site getting free appraisals so that they can then run off to ebay with their stuff.
2. Comments should be allowed. The "no comments" in the for-sale section really cuts back on the opportunity for sellers to learn when they are overpriced or mislabeling something.
3. Offers to buy should be done by PM to limit the clutter on the post. The idea being that the discussion actually stays on the topic of WIW.

Just read through this thread and I believe @Kern Dog is on to something. I also understand that the moderators have a full plate and are hesitant to add something that could become time intensive. So, maybe if a WIW section was added, a new moderator dedicated to just that one area could be added. Maybe someone with over 10 years on the site and over 100k in reaction score. Someone genuinely interested in the benefits of such a feature. Any takers?

My sisters will inherit my mess. Since none of us is guaranteed tomorrow, I have started marking things with a method pawn shops use. It allows them to tell at a glance what they have in an item so it's easier to close a sale.

They use a word or two with nine letters, none repeating. GOLD WATCH is one. G is 1, O is 2, L is 3....

For my sisters, I have the lure marked at $2,000. Not its full worth, but a price that will sell easily. Who would guess a fishing lure could be worth that much? I would have sold it already, but I'm hoping to find a lid to complete it and hoping it will cost less than $1,000.

The soap dispenser (also not for sale, please don't PM) I have no idea of value, so they are on their own with it.

I'm not a gold member, not by choice. I don't believe in credit cards and they won't accept a money order or check to renew the gold membership.

#1 Good idea.

#2 Yes comments should be allowed in WIW but not in a sale thread. For one thing, it bumps the tread to the top. Gold members are allowed to bump once every 3 days. Non Gold, bumping is not allowed. THose rules keep the sale threads fair and prevents members from bumping a sale every few min. to keep it at the top of page 1. Also unnecessary posts like "Nice car, GLWTS" and the like just plug up the ad and don't help sell the car or parts. (and they bump the thread to the top again.

#3 I agree. Offers to buy should always go through a PM. The original posters of a WIW question should know that offers to buy may come from a flipper or simply a member that is trying to buy the item for a real cheap price. The vultures are out there and the WIW posters don't know what things are worth so it's easy to get taken to the cleaners. I surely wouldn't want that to get out of hand as a protection to unknowing members.

My problem with the WIW posts is that too many times it is just a fishing expedition (maybe use that $2K lure... lol). The OP typically has an idea of what the thing is worth but is hoping someone will stroke their ego and tell them its worth more.

What a car part is worth is subjective, that item could be worth vastly more say in the NE of the country than it is in the south or the other way around. In other words, value (worth) varies by location.

Commensurate with that is the enviable attitude that seems to come with every WIW post when someone suggests that the value is below what the OP thinks (other other members believe).

It seems to me that if you really want to know what something is worth you could do some research (eBay, BAT, forum sales, etc.). That said, I recognize that if someone (me) doesn't like or want a WIW section then they don't have to click on that area or read it.

In other words, its still America (at least for now) and if that section is wanted then they should start one, if it gets out of control then trash it, no harm no foul...

I would rather have a WIW section than a political section.

It's a CAR forum.

I am pleased to be able to belong to this group.
The Moderator’s do a lot of baby sitting, keeping things in a semblance of order.
It is easy to suggest someone should do something, if it’s not the person making the suggestion that might have to do it.
What is the cost of a Gold membership per month? How much would a meal cost, tank of gas etc per month.
Who gets the flack when something offends a person?
What reward and thanks do the moderators get, if any.
Comments about sales, I think I might have got spanked for correcting a post about 66-7 b body regulators for sale. Ad said 66-7 b body regulators including Charger.
I posted that Charger was different trying to help the seller and prevent errors. He sent me a pm and thanked me.
My thoughts.

I'll assume because it immediately became a sale advertisement from a "what's it worth" posting and we know the mods hate those..
We don't hate them but most if not all turn into a sales thread...there's ALWAYS someone that will turn it into a sales thread!
I don't understand the resistance to a sub forum for that very thing. Lots of people have things to sell and don't know the value to place on the stuff.
I thought the same thing.....but a WIW thread in the ad forum will only turn into an Ebay type thread and that's something the site owner doesn't want.
blasphemy! ..........a good portion of the regulars would leave.
I don't know about that. Yeah, lots of members like it but the site had lots of members before the PF was made and well, there's too many that do nothing but go into the PF and no where else....and then you have the ones that do nothing but stir the pot there.

There is an easy way around all this.
If people want to know what they got, they should post a thread asking for identification of the part. Where to find casting numbers, application, rarity, whatever.
Armed with that info, most people can do some searching on google or ebay or whatever and find some history.
Value doesn't have to be any part of it. Information makes it possible to find value on your own.

Otherwise, and there are other threads about this, flippers AHOY! As soon as someone has a WIW thread you can just almost hear the flippers licking their lips.
A thread about identifying a part is not against forum rules and gives the asker all the info they need to find their own value. If there is something truly scarce, and hard to research a value on, there are two mindsets anyway: It's super scarce so it is worth a bundle, It's super scarce but no one is actually out there looking for one because of that so it is worthless. And besides that, no one here would know a proper "appraisal" for an item like that anyway.

Honestly when I see a WIW thread lately, I am of both minds- I get excited to see what someone has, because there is usually pictures, and cringe at the same time because I can see the vultures circling and hear them licking their chops and yelling down the hall "Betty! Go gas up the truck we got a live one!"
So I am fine with status quo on the topic. The flipper sceeze outweighs the curiosity I have about random parts or cars.

I'll bet that there are a few of you Moderators that wish that this forum did NOT have a political section but it seems to get a LOT of action. There are those that post in that forum that I'm sure never post anywhere else. No tech topics, no pictures, no active car projects, just politics.
I have come to appreciate the Political Forum, and no longer advocate for its removal from the sites.

Why you ask?

Simple.....if we have a Political Forum, and anyone posts anything remotely political or that way inclined anywhere but the correct forum, then there is no hesitation or guilty feelings about zapping that post or posts from existence in a heartbeat.

Until people learn to follow the few simple rules we have here, there will always be those who choose to bitch about the few simple rules we have.

Or maybe someone with over 200K posts and is retired and has a keen eye for details on cars....and experience in buying & selling them....

Hmmmmm....is there such a man ????? :poke::lol::poke::lol::poke:

Same theory works for a WIW forum, and it is 100 times more relevant to why most people are here.

Does seem weird that we can post nudie pictures and argue about which candidate is an idiot, but we can't ask what a car part is worth on a car forum because of the amount of work it would/could/might/might not generate.
Disclaimer: I am not a moderator and none of this causes more work for me, so it is easy for me to say what should be.

I see these forums as a Swiss Army Knife of things....Entertainment, education, announcements of events and the opportunity to reach a larger market to buy and sell things.
I used to post a lot at the Moparts WIW forum. It was fun. I don't recall there being any problems with it over there.
Many times, it was just people posting links to other people's stuff that was listed on craigslist, ebay, RacingJunk, Kiiji or other sites. Here, we are required to have the NOT MINE heading when a thread is posted about a listing but there, you weren't allowed to post links to YOUR OWN stuff in the WIW forum.
