Speedmaster bb heads

Yes, from meeting mopar people in my area. I got connected to a great guy named Dave 80yrs. Old. He worked at a few now defunct machine shops. He has built a machine shop in his barn. We does all different engines & heads. He just finished my 383 short block. 30 over bore/hone. Freeze plugs, cam bearings , turn crank 10/10. Sleve in 1 cylinder. Recon rods w/ arp & sonic clean block and reassembled $1,500
Damn, i wish he was near me :) I want someone to throw together a 408/390 bottom end for me..

Speedmaster has a 60% off sale right now. With that savings you could take them for a nice valve job. Don't know about the big block. But a friend who recently passed did a lot of small block Speedmasters. He said check them, fix the valve job and they were pretty decent for the money. When ported he liked them better that the SB Edelbrocks.

I would think if they put a 12 month warranty on the heads they will perform as needed.

I recently ran into someone having to replace the springs, valves (cupped tips) and guides (using oil) after a summer of driving on a set of Speedmaster heads. Tommy Boy comes to mind: IMG_8696.jpeg

After all that time, effort, delay & cash = No Deal. Spend wisely.
Trickflow bbm heads, $3000 now? Quality offset rockers, maybe $800, maybe $1200. Fabbed valve covers, $200. Edelbrock intake, maybe,$400. So, roughly $4600.
I might try the equivalent deal from speedmaster for $1400.
(And yes, I KNOW the quality is NOT equivalent, but someone might be in a position to spend $1500, and not $4500)

You can get a bare set of actual Victors for around $790 each with valves from companies like Hughes. They are not exactly expensive.

I Agree, but I saw a guy on you-tube ( I will look for link) he brought the kit & there roller rockers were Way Off. Don't remember valves. I do know he wanted Refund.

True, but another $500 at least for the rest of the head assy, maybe a grand for decent rockers, the current version of bbm Victor's need porting to flow as good as the first version, and the matching intake can be $500. (I know all this because I have the current version of Eddie Victor maxwedge-size heads. )
I've got $5k in my victors, rockers, and intake. I just wish the 270 trickflows existed when I bought my victors.

Has anyone ever seen a thread, on any site, where someone bought the SM BBM Victor style top end package and the theme is that it was a complete success story?

You basically rarely ever hear of anyone using those heads.
I wonder how many they sell each year, and if they’re mostly leftover stock from several years ago, or if they’re recently made castings.

It’s just a curiosity for me.

I did talk to one guy, a few years ago, running the speedmaster victors on a 440 in a (racecar) roadster.
He said he changed the valves and springs of course, and re-did the valve job, but he was happy with the castings. Mid 5s 1/8th.
(the speedmaster victors can be spotted across a parking lot, by the freeze plugs in the ends).

The castings aren’t bad.
It’s just everything else.

Someone starting with the complete top end package, determined to use all of it(if possible), and documenting all that that entails would make for a good YouTube video.
From opening the boxes to making pulls on the dyno.
It would probably have to be a multi-part series.

If you knew rocker shaft fit into the saddles was good, that’s a decent deal.
I’ve only had 5 of those heads in my shop.
The most recent pair had the rocker shaft saddle fit issue.
That was probably like 5 years ago.

They just aren’t a nice enough head to have to spend the big bucks on for the good offset rockers.

When a bunch of SM parts get put together and everything works out as planned. I sit back in amazement.

Don’t get me started on Speedmaster stories! LOL
