Hi all I have a noise and I can't seem to find out where it is coming from. I was driving down the street and punched my car and that is when it started. It sounds like it is coming from my starter so I changed out starters and the noise is still there. I checked the flex plate and it is ok. I put my steheascope on the bell housing right where the starter hooks up and that is where the noise is coming from. Could there be two bad starters? It definately sounds like it is coming from the flywheel area..I'm very frustrated I can't seem to find out where this noise is coming from..Any suggestions will help. I have a 63 ply with a 440 engine, and 727 trans..thanks..

I just don't see what makes you think its the starter. Are the flex plate to converter bolts all tight? Try running without the inspection cover and see if it still makes the noise. The starter engages and disengages, if its staying engaged you will kill the starter fast. If the converter is hitting the starter you would have seen that on the old starter.

It makes the noise with the cover off bolts are all tight.

Did the nose of the starter you pulled look damaged like the flywheel was rubbing?

Pull the big wire off the starter and turn the key to see if the solenoid engages and disengages.

I'm just saying that if it were the starter it would either be loud or already trashed the starter.

Whats the sound like, can you record it of describe it more?

Maybe someone else will chime in with an idea.

the noise sounds just like something is rubbing or hitting the flywheel. Just got back from underneath the car with my stephascope and the noise is definately coming from right where the starter goes in . While the engine is running I can look in and see where the flywheel goes by the starter and it doesnt look like anything is touching??? very frustating..I know these things, always slove them selfs out but it is driving me crazy...

If there's nothing obvious I'd unbolt the T.C. and move back to see if there's room between it and the flexplate then turn and feel, listen to it. Then put a dial indicator on the crank and pry back and forth to check thrust bearing.

I Had a cracked flex plate that looked fine with the motor off but would open up and flex to much and make a tinging sound while running. I didn't see the crack untill after about another week of driving when it got bigger and louder.
The flex plate is only about $20.00 to replace.Get back under there and move the TC back and forth with a small bar and look for a crack while spinning the TC around.

Sounds like the flex plate to me also.

starter noise

They say no news is good news lol.Did you find the problem?

Hello, and yes I did!! Took the starter off and there is a metal gasket that was interfering with the bolts on the flex plate. So I fixed that problem. Thanks to all who gave suggestions to this problem. Muchly appreciated
