Taking Up New Residence

I've been wanting to color the faded dash pad above the glove box. The glove box door needs painted also having a couple of nicks that rusted and a couple of small dings. And the speaker grill could use some sprucing up. Just one of those things that you never seem to get to. Well here we go.

Before picture...

First thing is to remove two small screws holding the glove box to the door. Then you have to move the box inward, turn it sideways and remove to one side of the opening.

Now remove the four screws under the dash that holds the door hinge to the dash frame.

I removed the speaker grill after this but didn't take any pictures of the procedure. You'll see how it's done later on during assembly.

Here's where it helps to be a contortionist. Seven studs with stamped nuts hold the pad to the dash. A open end wrench is needed for the ones across the top. A socket and extension can be used for the rest.

After all the nuts are removed pull out at the bottom of the pad first to remove.

I bought a paintless dent puller from Harbor Freight ($18) for another job awhile back and it worked good on pulling these small dents also. Sanded, prepped, painted and cleared the glove box door.

Repainted and cleared the speaker grill also.

Painted the pad with a Ford interior paint from Eckler's (MACs)

The factory painted the door and hinge assembly as one piece. No paint where you can't see it.

Assembled the door, hinge, lock and stop.

Removed the light assembly cleaned and lubed it. New bulb also.

Installed the pad before installing the door.

Installing the box. Hold it sideways to insert.

If your car didn't come with a radio and speaker you'll find a piece of black cardboard behind the grill.

Hook the top in the slots first.

Then carefully align the tabs at the bottom and push inward. Remove in the opposite procedure CAREFULLY!

Done deal

I've used it on several small dents, like hailstone dents and it worked perfectly. On a car that's been repainted it's taking a chance of pulling paint versus factory paint that's been baked on.

A little update. (Sounds a little funny when you're talking about a glove box)

I read that two of the original Foward Look Chrysler/Dodge designers from the 50's and 60's were going to be at the 2021 Chryslers at Carlisle. Thought it might be a good opportunity to meet them and get a couple of autographs. Hey why not take the glove box insert along and have that autographed.

Well meeting them was a pleasure and an honor after talking to each of them individually. Gordon Davis is known for the Turbine design work along with many of the "Fin" designs. I happen to mention that I owned a 1962 Dodge and right away he stated his feelings about the doing away with fins. I got the impression that cars would still be wearing fins today if he had any say so. His artwork on display was amazing!

Diran Yazejian was a super nice guy along with his wife that was also there. She's a proud supporter! He was actually working with Chrysler/DeSoto and later transferred to Dodge in 1963. He's known for his involvement with the second generation Charger. Supposedly the '66/'67 body style was to continue into '68 but the second generation was pushed forward. Just think that there might have only been '69 and '70 second gens!

The "Foward Look" ended in 1962. The '62 design has been debated in the past whether it should be classified as a "B" body. It's pretty much accepted as such now days.

Gordon was hired by Director of Design, Virgil Exner, at the beginning of the Forward Look era. He contributed to the turbine concept designs and Virgil Exner’s XNR, which influenced the early ‘60s vehicle lineup. He later designed the “jewelry” for the 1959 DeSoto. After his time with Chrysler, Gordon moved on to American Motors and also designed motorcycle and auto accessories, construction equipment and RVs.

Meet Chrysler Designer Diran Yazejian
Diran’s love of cars began as a child and after serving in the US Army, he attended Art Center School (now Art Center College of Design). He was hired by Chrysler upon graduation where he went to work in the Chrysler-DeSoto Exterior Studio. He transferred to Dodge in 1962 and was later part of the team that designed the ’68 Charger. Outside of the studio, Diran could be found in his garage doing restorations on his own Mopars.

The only time I was at the FBBO tent was at 12:00 on Saturday. Then later on that day, when I was too tired from walking around, I stopped in and hung out until it was time to go. I'm still recovering from that weekend. Maybe next time
