Taking Up New Residence

Added up the parts, just under $350. I guess that's a cheap exhaust system now days.

I use to install them every week back in the day, and the pipes were already made for the car. Plus it was on a lift!

Arthur didn't like what I did. I'm all flared up today! But I enjoyed doing it one more time. It's what it's all about.

I think I will cheap out and get pipe and elbows from Napa, and turn them down in front of the axle. I did my Hemi that way a couple years ago. Good enough for me!

Got the headers all plumbed up this week. Word of advice, don't measure anything when doing one yourself. The engine sits off center and cocked, one header is longer than the other, the tunnel is two inches off center in the floor. I was trying to figure out how one half of the system wasn't looking like the other. That's why! So just wing it, throw the tape measure back in your tool box.

Bought the X pipe, mufflers and misc. pieces from Jegs. Bought the tail pipes from Summit.

Mocking up everything, cutting where ever to make it work out. Then just tack weld to move on to the next piece.

Then I took it all apart to weld on the table, instead of trying it on my back under the car. I need a lift!

Useing galvanized pipe, sand or scotch bright where your going to weld first. Makes it a whole lot easier to weld.

You have to think about what you're going to weld first. Having everything tacked good, welding where it doesn't have a "pulling" effect on your piece. Use a couple of clamps will help too. You don't want it to pull out of shape.

Then I cleaned the welds, wiped it all down with thinner and gave it a coat of high heat paint.

Super nice work Kid, you can work on my car anytime!!!

Some updating. Life has been getting in the way some but this is what has been done lately.

I dropped the old gas tank and didn't want to install the new one with all of the undercoating that's in this area. Might be a little risky useing a heat source around the tank after it's installed.

Here's the link for the tank removal.

Quite nasty with all of the undercoating.

Glad I bought a new tank, ect.

The filler tube is really crusted with rust and just cleaning it up isn't going to be good enough. It will rust again and contaminate the tank.

I ordered a new one from Mega Parts. They were out of stock and didn't tell me. A couple of emails and they now have them and one is on its way.

Back to scraping undercoating! I'm just doing the frame rails on both sides of the tank and the floor in that area.

I'm finally done getting it scraped off. Now on to sanding and wiping it down with thinner. It looks like brand new under the coating!

In between other things and not wanting to lay on my back cleaning up the tank area, I've been buying parts and doing some mocking up.

Found this on Ebay for a good price. The seller didn't have any hardware so I contacted Billet Specialties and they were so kind to send me what I needed and at a very reasonable price. Great to deal with! (The red paint will be removed)

Here's some more goodies. Fuel rail and line to fuel pump. Did some measurements and needed to drop the carbs a bit more. I should have 1/2" clearance under the hood. I'll be useing a torque strap for sure.

This is with the 1" carb spacer. Too close!

Going with the "Old School" look.

Just mocking up. Everything has to come back off before final assembly.

Hoping to paint the underside of the tank area, install tank and fuel line this week. We'll see!

Now that's What I'm Talking About! Looking Fantastic Kid!!

Very clean looking underneath all that undercoating. I've got to clean all the undercoating off my 64 Savoy project. I'm not looking forward to that at all. I'd like to just have it dipped, but a couple of painters I talked to ran away screaming. So I'm guessing that's not a good idea?

I know it can be done but haven't heard of anyone on here doing it. Maybe start a thread on it.

It doesn't take that much heat to soften this undercoating. I use a Sears heat gun. I did find out that any body caulk will burn so you have to be gentle around any seams where there's caulk.

Something was spilled in my trunk and it leaked through one of the body plugs. The area of undercoating that absorbed the spill will wipe off with a brush or rag. It might have been gas that was spilled. I'll probably try and use a solvent on the rest of it one day, after all of the mechanicals are done.

Don't forget the replacing the pad on top of the tank! Squeak possibly avoided.

Is the new filler tube stainless steel? Looks too shiny for being plated. Nice!

Actually it's zinc plated. True galvinizing isn't done very much anymore. (EPA)

I looked for a place to recoat mine and all I found was chrome plating. The nearest zinc plating wasn't too close to me. Then I saw these at Mega Parts. For $65 you can't go wrong. Then I didn't receive any shipping info from them, so three days later, after an email, they tell me I should have received a back order notification. Here we go again! Just went through this with the trans mount. But they came through and it's a good looking piece, half the price as the other one I saw and who knows what it would have cost to replate it. It's a wonder anyone even has these!

Yeah.... we sell stuff Cheap here in Wisconsin!

I had the same 2-4 intake on a 70 Barracuda 383. Used 400 cfm Carters with electric chokes on both carbs, no spacers, other the WOT mix being not quite right I loved it. It also got 2mpg better mileage then any 4 barrel setup. It used a progressive linkage along with the vacuum secondary's. It also had the best cold "snowy" starting for any big block Mopar. 60 seconds after start could give it close to full throttle. Had to make my own "bathtub" air cleaner base plate from fiberglass. Used 2 coffee cans wrapped with duct tape to get the right size and made it a little extra tall to sand it down for just the right height for use with a real hemi hood. The base plate sealed to the hood and used the Hemi filter assy.
no pictures and was a long time ago.

I still can't get over the shape this car is in. Well preserved!

This is the most surface rust under this area because spilled gas washed off the undercoating. Useing only a Dremmel sander, it's bare metal without any pitting.

I took a video of the underside. It's only been wiped off with mineral spirits after the undercoating removal. (I did sand on the one frame rail a little) You can see the dipping through a hole in the shock mount frame near the end.
