The Best Year for the Charger?

I’ve been telling people 346 for over 20 years. Before that the # was 166 total, which was wrong. From the ‘70 Charger registry.

For decades no one really knew the actual production numbers of 70 V code Charger R/T cars. Mine is one of the automatic cars. I have the matching numbers engine, but the transmission was missing, so I replaced it with an 18 spline Hemi 4 speed transmission from a 70 Cuda, and a Dana 60 rear axle with 3.54 gears.

It seems to me the automatic cars survived better. All the ones I see for sale are D32. Interesting that the automatic was “free”… but you lost the Dana in the process.

They said 112 total V code Charger production for years. According to my Galen report on my car 349 manual transmission equipped cars and 337 automatic transmission equipped cars.
I am surprised to learn that so many V-code '70 Charger's were built. I had always heard it was around 110. Like I said in an earlier post, there is one near me in St. Thomas, Ontario, still with its original owner. It is black with white vinyl top and white stripes on the hood. Automatic car.

I think the '68 is still the most sought. And if for some reason I had a choice? Today? If one has a line on any '68-'70 Charger for decent deal? That would be my favorite. Lol.

I have posted story before. My friends '69 base model Charger SE. Base 383 auto. Vs my '69 GTX. The 440 out performs. My 4-speed vs auto is a better muscle car experience. The GTX with the Dana rear drives heavier and nicer than his Charger. He does get more attention with the B5 blue with black interior vs My F8 green with camel tan. Thus he did win a quick pole at our local pub on which car? 7-5.

Every indication is he can get 30% to 50% more for his Charger than my GTX.

BOTTOM LINE! Those Gen II Chargers are HOT!!!!? Any of the 3 years.

You could get the Dana with an automatic, but you would have had to order the track pack option to get a 3.54,or the super track pack option to get a 4.10 ratio axle.

What’s weird is I bought my Charger off of a guy I have known for years. He bought the car off of the Original owner who had blown the engine from running it dry of oil and it had a 400 in it. It still was wearing the original paint and everything when he brought it in. It was supposedly had the original 8 3/4 in it and it looked to me to have never been apart. When I tore it apart it had a 3.91 sure grip With a build date of 2/70 on it which matched my build date on the other parts on the car within a month. My car was built on 6-26-70. No build sheet with the car to prove it either way but according to the registry I’m guessing no 3.91 cars. My car also has dual painted racing mirror’s. Late build stuff that maybe could have happened??

Painted racing mirrors were a new option for the spring of 1970. I have them on all of my 70 Chargers, but the one built in April actually came with them from the factory. The 3.91 performance axle package was an option as well.

I have the G-36 option for the mirrors on my fender tag

Yup. A33 was required with D21 on the 440’s and Hemi. The automatic was a no cost option, because they reverted to the 8 3/4. If you got a 318 or 383 the automatic was over $200 extra. Maybe the factory was trying to “push” you into the slushbox. Easier on the driveline and way less chance of over revving the engine.

Like the old saying goes.. I "might" give up a 67 for 2 Daytonas...

But yeah, they're all nice.

My car used to stable with a pink 70 RT SE Sixpack 4 speed sunroof luggage rack unrestored car. White top.
It eventually moved to the states and is living in some fancy collection, I assume.

There was a pink sunroof car that burned from the dashboard back,I assumed another ammeter guage fire. Only 112 70 sunroof cars built, how many were pink Charger R/T cars. My guess is that was the car you are talking about.

1968, it's no contest, hands down the winner
best looking car/Charger ever... especially the R/T optioned versions
best grill, best profile, best taillights of any year

albeit;
I do like the 1969 Charger 500 Hemi 4 speed Dana 60, a close 2nd
1970 Charger R/T a close 3rd

of course, it's all subjective & to me it's not even debatable

Now that's interesting...
@440 4 speed might still have a picture somewhere. That would be the wrong car to have a fire!

I thought, wow, that was probably a one of one car when I saw it burned! ! think I saw it on copars few years ago.
