I recall mom and dad buying a 4 bedroom 1500 sq ft tract hose in 1972 for $17,500. They sold in 1977 for $42,000 and bought a bigger 1900 sqft 2 story for $51,500. Crazy…

My parents paid $8600 bucks for our little house and quarter acre back in 1960 and raised 6 kids in it.

My mom's first house was 28K in 1980.

1/3 acre, 1200 SF plus unfinished basement.

Hard to believe, but it's true that one time in early '89, my wife and I went to the grocery store with just $10. (lean times back then for us newlyweds). We kept track with paper and pencil what we put in the cart as we moved through the store so we didn't come up short at the checkout. I think we walked out with 2 bags of groceries. Nothing extravagant, of course, but we made it work.

We bought a half-acre lot and built our new 1500 sq. ft. rancher, with 4 car attached garage at the end of 2003 for $250,000. It is worth around $850,000 now.

We got our slice of heaven here in VT for $205,700 in 2012. It's worth $ 425,000 now. 11 acres with a 2800 sft log cabin. Double garages and a full apartment over head.

We paid what was top dollar in 2001 for our fixer-upper lakefront cottage in NH, but prices have gone so crazy on the lake in recent years that we just wouldn't be able to afford it today.
