A buddy of mine does iron work for a bunch of high end designers.. I occasionally help him with installs... Been in many 10-25 million dollar homes... In one over in SF that I helped with recently the stairs had an intrusion that dropped the overhead down to about 5'8"..... Home was originally built in 1922 & was receiving a complete remodel...Building codes require a minimum clearance from the edge of the stair tread to the ceiling. If I recall, in CA it is 6’6”. I’ve seen houses where space is cramped for the stairs and that head clearance is less than code. Stairs have some strict limitations on height and length so it can be tricky to fit all of them in a tight space. I’ve seen ceilings modified to get to the minimum clearance. Done right, you may not know that it was a Band Aid.
