The Old Wheel Size / Tire Size Debate..Pro Touring?

If you want to nail the fitment down and max out the wells this is what you need, it allows you to see how any given combo will fit. I'll go ahead and warn you now on the pricing and fitment, if you want a set of wheels for a fair price they are usually going to be cast aluminum 9.5 wide with 4.5 backspacing for the rears (one size fits all). When you start wanting different widths and offsets you mostly go into the made to order billet wheel makers with the prices being north of $500.00 each. A good wheel for you to look at since you like the Torue Thrust look is the Boss 383 "pretty cheap and nice". Good LuckView attachment 156581View attachment 156582
Thanks 747, well aware of the costs and custom backset approach which isn't a factor. I'll do what I need to for the look I want. Most of the nicer rims offer 3 or4 different backsets without going the custom route. Those fitment tools are great but they don't tell the whole story, like section width.

This thread had served my purpose. I think I'll go with 17 x 8 in front and 18 x 10 in the rear (for now). I'll play with tires and back spacing when the new rolling gear is in. Just trying to focus the vision of what it will be, a bit.

That will look great, Speedfreak did that same combo on his Charger and it looks great with the tires he selected. P.S they do show section width as well via a wire bent to the dimensions. Good luck with the Bird

If any of you guys are looking at buying the Percy wheel/tire fitment tool, I would be happy to sell you mine. I bought it for my Charger project and will probably not need it again.

Sort of I suppose but has always seemed a little make shift to me. I like the old string and tape measure approch then leave 3/4" for fudge factor. Thanks.

I would have been but already built one, Thanks

Check these out Prop.
The 69 has been tubbed and narrowed though. Minis.jpg

I like 38"s and a little larger in the front .. especially if it's original equipment

I've been tinkering around with the idea of larger wheels and tires and the pro touring look myself.. something along the lines of HYRDGOON's ride

vbpgimage.php

There is no question that the GOON has nailed it. I love the look and stance. Maybe a twist or two to drop the front end a touch. I love a little rake.

Gotta agree "that looks pretty damn nice" and has the right stance. I really like Jeff's too but would raise it just a fuzz in the rear "I like a little rake".

Thanks for the kind words fellas! Runner 68 I'm with you on dropping my front end an inch or two. I'm going to take it down with the torsion bars to see how I like it then with whatever future suspension mods I get in to will likely do drop spindles. I actually do regret I didn't go with a staggered look (17's front and 18's rear) I just like the look of that better but the rims on my car aren't what I set out that day intending to buy... I had to deal with what was available from the tire shop I was dealing with because they were giving me a smoking deal so I sort of picked those last minute and 18's weren't available.

Oh and for anyone curious I've posted it a few times but my combo was 17X8 (front) and 17X9 (rear) American Racing T70R's with Nitto NT555 P255/45ZR17 & P285/40ZR17 95W

All in all I'm happy but if I were to reconsider I love the rims on this charger that's in the shop next to my car (and 4eyedblonde's) but would prefer them in a matte black or gunmetal finish

I have been meaning to give TH $hit about this picture. I can't see the full view of the front rims on that Charger with that damn broad in the way.

The oversize wheels look cool if matched to the car properly. You'll be spending a whole lotta cash on suspension "upgrades" wheels and tires, though.

So, if your roads are smooth and you like the low profile tire look and can put up with the harsh ride and have twice the dollars to spend, go for over sized wheels.

If you like a smoother ride and have semi rough roads and want to keep a few dollars for gas, more power, etc. stay with 15" and stock ride height. If you drive a lot and want to rotate the tires to get as many miles out of them as you can then make them all the same size.

Thanks mechanic. I grew up like most of us with the practical mechanics of how a car works, what is most efficient, comfortable, smooth ride, etc. You’re talking about transportation. I have a Volvos and Toyotas for that.

My Runner isn't transportation. It's a 68 Plymouth Roadrunner, arguably the second most significant muscle car in history. It's a cool piece of automotive history. To look at it as transportation is a slap in the face of all muscle cars. Comfort and efficiency isn't in the equation. Think about it, these cars aren't exactly the pinnacle of superior automotive engineering.

The point of this thread is simply about looks and what will work without tearing itself apart.

Sorry Runner, I was to busy looking at her to realize that you can't see the wheel.

You left out one other factor "tire roll". My last build had 15's and I could feel the tires rolling under threw every hard corner "not a good feeling either". As for ride comfort, my Chrysler Aspen has factory 20's with a fairly low profile and it handles better than any other SUV or truck I've had and is a pretty nice comfy ride.

Actually .. it's a cool thread Runner and a lot of great suggestions, cool cars and examples, even a sweet sweet babe. But if you look at your opening comment/solicitation you asked for opinions and were clearly open to old school, practical ideas and the modern styles and technology in the beginning.

The mechanic answered your question with his opinion ... that you asked for.

Yes Grasshopper but how many times did I emphasize the question was about look? Not one question in the OP about function.

Well sensei perhaps if you rethink your plan midstream you should roll with it. He answered your question. Just node and walk on.

Sorry brother, you probably didn't know. I can't "node" very well. Old war injury.

Sum of a bitch! That f@rking spell checker F'd up a perfectly valid response (which still stands) and left you with with an easy spell checker response for a comeback.

Point remains.

Your choice is gonna be sweet but cut the people answering your dang question some slack brother
