The Old Wheel Size / Tire Size Debate..Pro Touring?

Thanks mechanic. I grew up like most of us with the practical mechanics of how a car works, what is most efficient, comfortable, smooth ride, etc. You’re talking about transportation. I have a Volvos and Toyotas for that.

My Runner isn't transportation. It's a 68 Plymouth Roadrunner, arguably the second most significant muscle car in history. It's a cool piece of automotive history. To look at it as transportation is a slap in the face of all muscle cars. Comfort and efficiency isn't in the equation. Think about it, these cars aren't exactly the pinnacle of superior automotive engineering.

The point of this thread is simply about looks and what will work without tearing itself apart.
Sorry, you're wrong. These cars were purpose-built and meant to be driven. Often. Enjoy it. Yes, it is Legendary but not a Museum piece. If the throttle of a big block Mopar does not make you smile, my condolences. Yes we need a few Museum pieces for reference. For the rest of us, DRIVE them. Not to be looked at. Driven. People better than us had the Vision to design and build this stuff. Let's jusst enjoy them and drive them, as they were meant to be driven.

No argument there but key word, were. To each his own I suppose. Sure they're fun to drive, so fun in fact I would prefer to save and savor it. Why drag them out on a frozen, pot hole, gravel on the road February day to go to the supermarket? Not the right tool for the job. Best saved for a warm July evening to go get ice cream.

Dennis H I don't get the impression he's saying it's not meant to be driven but simply it's not meant to be the "daily driver" ) i.e. "transportation" I think you both see it as the same purpose to be driven and enjoyed but last I checked wheel and tire size never dictated whether a car could or would be driven! I had 15's on my car the last 3 years and 17's now... IMO the 17's handle/corner better but they also follow the imperfections of the road a little more pulling you in to ruts etc... As far as ride goes I still have enough rubber on my sidewall that I didn't notice a huge difference in ride quality and I definitely DRIVE my car.

"DAMN PURISTS" HAHAHAH SORRY TALLHAIR I HAD TOO LOL

YUP my front end needs to come down!!

Damn Hyrdgoon that's one beautiful RR, it will look even better once you drop or raise the rear as mentioned "sweet". I'm really not liking this thread anymore "I can't decide what I want now".

Decisions, decisions...LOL...

LOL.........Nothing like buying a part, putting it on, standing looking at it for a few minutes and start thinking ahhhhhhhh sh*ttt!!! No!

To answer your question, lots of work to do before I actually get there. Don't think it hasn't crossed my mind that the Retro 15 inch rim look is a safe bet....known quantity. Hell my car currently has 14s on it. I may be in for an expensive shock if I don't like it.

so how many people are looking at this thread and wondering what you are gonna do? i can hear everyone behind the screen saying hurry up and pick some wheels so we know what to do or not to do. " you take the 2k gamble and we'll see if it looks good or not" lol

If I had to do it today, Boss 338s. 17 x 8 up front, 18 x 10 in the rear. Only problem is the Boss 338s only come in an 18 x 9.5 for the rear. Always something. I know it's only 1/2 inch but perhaps something similar. Lots of choices out there these days.

when it comes down to d-day, ill put mine on my drive-on lift and take some pics and measurements of clearance all the way around. i have about 3 or 4 buddies with those wheels, they look good.

I'm sure you know this but the 9.5 is the inside dimensions meaning they are 10.5 outside dimensions add 1/2" bulge per side and you have an 11.5" wide tire. I actually measured some wheels at Summit to confirm this, with the Chargers quarters tapering in and down like they do this is a snug fit. I also keep thinking about these because of the price but I really want to do something a little different "it's a very popular style". I have until Spring to decide but like I said your thread is a help.

These wheels are over in the for sale forum right now, tires and all. I've been looking at them but don't know that I like 18's and 20's. These are the ones that Prop suggested on my thread "I gotta admit seeing them on a B Body sure makes them look better.- - - Updated - - -

Now why would they do it differently Everybody goes to the inside. That makes me feel better. I'm more concerned with section width of the tire. That's the killer.

Thanks 747! and agreed it needs to be leveled one way or the other... Will start most likely with front coming down as that's the easiest and then see what that does for my drivability and impression... I really like the stance of Jeff Ashley's so I think I'll be happy with it. For what it's worth I love the rim choice you put the picture up of on page one!

Where the hell is Jeff Ashley's car? Did I miss it?

LOL.........Nothing like buying a part, putting it on, standing looking at it for a few minutes and start thinking ahhhhhhhh sh*ttt!!! No!

Especially after you dump a couple of grand on said parts.

And that's where the problem lies because make no mistake no matter what you choose and spend that couple grand on you WILL see rim/tire combos on other peoples cars and say "Sh#t I really wish I'd seen those when I was looking" or some thing of the like.... there's a benefit to these threads and pics sections to seeing what everyone has done and getting a really good idea of what you like but I think there will always be a second guess. I know I did have a guy follow me into a parking lot the week after I got my tires and rims and said "I have a 69 Coronet that I haven't been able to decide on the rims for but I really like yours... do you have a problem with me getting the exact same and if not can I have all the info" I just gave him the number of the store and told him my name and say give me what he had!

Thanks GOON, got him confused with yours. Posts were back to back. I like yours too Jeff.

You know the old expression "Like an old woman shopping for shoes'?
How about "Like an old gear head shopping for wheels and tires".
