Trailer Hitches???

We have been in the trailer business(Boulder City Trailers) over 30+ years.

I would not sell a 5000+ trailer to anyone who was towing it with a B or A Body.
Tail wagging the dog syndrome

When I bought my 71 Challenger, it had this ball mount in the trunk - looks like it clamped to the bumper with no ties to the frame rails at all. Scary to think of ever using it that way.

My Dad had one of those on his 70 Dart.
Used it for his one man boat loader. Roof racks and a 14 foot Jon boat.
Yeah, not for towing...

My Roadrunner had one on that I took off to have the tailpipes ring properly. According to the original owner, he was towing his buddies dragster to Milan on Sundays back in the day.

Bumper is strong, possibly stronger than unibody "frame" rails...and mounts are strong.
I towed a second size up U Haul trailer slam full from OH to FL with a bumper clamp hitch on my 67 Coronet.

All that said, the ball mount angle stock above does look a little sketchy.

My 70 GTX had one just like that. Bolted to the bumper and welded to the frame.

In 1998 I picked up a 69 Coronet RT convertible that also had a trailer hitch bolted to the frame and looked like a completely ok set up. Maybe it was a factory unit? It was apparently installed by the original owner (Chief of a FD outside of Buffalo, NY) back in the early 70s. I never did try it out, of course, but I'm pretty sure I still have the entire set up in the parts barn somewhere... Should have some pics around here somewhere too. I sold the car a few years ago but its still on the road, and not far from where it was sold new - but now on the Canadian side.

Does anyone collect these, want them - or is it just scrap at this point? I would be happy to donate mine to anyone who wants it!

What's it for?

I bought one that was supposed to fit my 73 Satellite, and found out on arrival it was for a Charger and the bumper bolt part is completely different.

Every now and then there's a "Wanted" thread for one.

What is it off of? Can you post some pictures?

On my 68 parts car. Looks like it was made for this application. Sorry for the crappy underside picture.

Picture posted above. It was in the trunk of my Challenger but I never tried installing it and not sure it would fit - it looks to be missing the bottom part of the clamps.

Just removed this one from a 67 coronet... interesting that it simply bolts into the factory tie down holes and thru the bumper brackets...no welding required

That looks like what is on my 68 pictured above. I didn't recall the plate with the two holes for the safety chains so I just went out and looked. It is there, just beneath and behind the bumper. Wonder if it was a Mopar accessory or aftermarket.

My 68 Bee had one from previous owner. For some reason the hiway patrol took issue with me towing my dads boat at 75+ back in the day;) Still have it around here somewhere.

I thought possibly a Mopar accessory as well... especially since it's a direct bolt in

Towing experiences.
Mom and Dad had a 61 313 3 on the tree Pioneer. Bumper clamp hitch.
Flat towed a 57 Meteor 150 miles, not too many hills.
“ “ 60 XK 120 200 miles “ “ “ “
I put lots of miles on our first still have 67 318 Charger pulling a camper, also a 16 foot 1957 Peterborough 18 hp Johnson, Home built frame hitch.
Pulled a 23 foot 350 inboard Reinell of my brother’s with another 318 67 Charger 150 miles dealer installed hitch, poor thing got down to 30 mph second gear coming out of the river valley.
1991 pulled a crank down camper with the 67 440 auto Charger to Aurora Missouri. It has a very heavy duty manufactured hitch, frame and bumper mount. On that trip came back through part of Oklahoma. Doing about 70 mph. Divided state highway, passed a slow moving farmer pulling a load of something. Few minutes later Jackie Gleason turned his lights on and pulled up beside me, cigar in his mouth. Flashed me with 5 fingers twice and carried on. Also on this trip was our son, nephew and a friend in a 67 Charger. Thought we were in Smokey and the Bandit.
Because we were at the TDC Meet we got roam around Ron Slobe’s Yard. He had STUFF!
1991, picked up two 66 Chargers in February one driver one no engine. They were 240 miles away. Had a 1976 350 full time Blazer. 12-13 miles per Imperial gallon whether you pulled anything or not. Picked the cars up. Coming back there was a long decline in a valley. All of a sudden there was a car coming down the other side. I slowed down and the tail of the dog tried to take over. Wide shoulders, steep ditches, used up the whole road, looking to go straight in the ditch if I had to. Got things straightened out. The oncoming car had slowed down, he wiped his forehead and gave me a thumbs up. Never flat towed anything again with that Blazer. Flat towed things with our trucks and 4Runners, because the longer wheelbase.
Have a friend that towed his 80 something Mustang 200 miles to the strip here to compete. Used a 1978 I think, old RCMP highway 440 Pursuit Plymouth Fury.
The fastest production car in North America.
I apologize if I have been redundant.

I believe this was a Chrysler promotional picture from back in the day. Although they didn’t offer the receiver as a factory option, they seemed to encourage towing.
I find the thought of trying to tow an Airsteam with a Challenger to be terrifying!

I believe the Challenger Tow package for RV's came with a 426 Hemi, 833 and a Dana 60 4.10, or that is what the wives were told.
