I had the car out today using the GPS 1/4 mile app, when WHAMMO GRIND RUMBLE CLACK CLACK Followed by puff of white smoke, and parts scattering across the road from under the car as I got onto the brakes to stop. I immediatly began shutting things down like fuel pump, engine, water pump...
After getting to a stop and putting out a small flame going on the header neer the collector, I began the assement and tried to figure out what the hell just happened!
As I looked underneeth the car, I could see the torque converter through the big *** hole on the bellhousing! A while later after picking up the debris field I left behind, I looked at the car again and realized that the bellhousing was split all the way around about half way back from the mounting face.
I have no idea yet as to what would have caused the tranny to twist completely in half like that, but it is in the car at about 10deg rotation from the front half still bolted to the back of the block!
Anyhow,,,, The car made a 10.67 sec run with failure included!!!!..LOL!!!
I hope it's only a tranny swap to fix things back up!

OMG!!!!

input shaft cracked in half? possibly got jammed up??

probably want change converter too...

:worthless_thread:

Congrats!!You makin some power. You'll need a stronger one this time:thinker:

What were you using for motor mounts & trans mount??

Bummer man just at the start of spring too. That's weird that a 727 would just break like that at the bell housing? I'm guessing it was a pretty built tranny with the combo you have to go 10.67 sec. Hopefully its a simple swap out with another transmission. Is your torque converter full of shavings too from the incident?

I have to take it all apart to completely determin the damage. I didn't feel anything going on prior to the destruction,,, just pulling like a freight train in third gear! I'm nervous to see all the damage though! I didn't see any oil leaks, so I think the engine is ok,,,,,, and the front half of the bellhousing is still bolted up to the block, so I think the damage is probably limited to the bellhousing itself.
I have rubber engine and trans mounts.... Nothing aftermarket their. I plan on making an engine plate mount for up front, but haven't got that far yet... Do you think it twisted too much and broke?
I thought the driveshaft let loose at first, but it's all in tact. I just imagined the driveshaft front section digging into the ground and waiting for it to launch me and the car once it bit hard enough! My wife seemed more pissed then I am,,, I'm just glad nothing worse happened to me! It should be fun tearing the thing apart anyhow,, so no big deal! I'll have another tranny in a week or so, and get things back together.

Hopefully you had a drive shaft loop,if not I bet it will when you put it bach together.
The only time I recall a reans breaking the tail is with an engine plate & solid trans mount.Guess it just "time":edgy:

That sounds nasty. The closest I've had to that is a similar sound and come to find out I spun the rear sprag in the trans and split the case in 2.
Hope all goes well for ya! Hope the wife isn't too mad at needing a new transmission.

Holy crap, that is definitely not a normal failure. I hope the damage is confined to just the tranny. I wonder if there was some failure in the tranny case that went unnoticed during assembly.

Good you didn't get hurt, machinery can be replaced.. I really agree with the idea of a drive shaft loop, this could have really went south. Good luck with the reassembly, hope the trans is the only thing involved..

Preliminary pics

Here's a shot looking from the drivers side. You can see the starter lying on the header and the torque converter. The crack runs all the way around to the other side! The other pic is pieces that I picked up from the edge of the road.....:icon_scratch:

Sounds like you got the kahunas to finally stay in it! I hope nothing worse happened than what meets the eye.

If your in the market I've got a couple extra big block 727's that I can make you a heck of a deal on.

Dave

PM sent Dave.

i have seen damage like that from a stock aluminum drum breaking inside the trans.switched to steel with next trans.all the breaks look shiny and new, look for any dark spots on the crack line to see if there was any old breaks.driveshaft loop is a must on a car as fast as yours sounds, hope the damage is contained in the trans only.

I think everything behind the front pump is fine, and the converter would have protected the back of the engine pretty good along with the SFI flex plate. with that being said, I don't think I'll find anything internaly having exlpoded through the case.
This next weekend will paint the picture though! I'll have it out by the weeks end!

Yes,,, A scatter shield and driveshaft loop is completely in order! I used to use a trans blanket, but it was always kinda messy non form fitting.... I like the new type of shield that forms to the bellhousing and runs back behind the front pump. I think Hemi-itis uses this type as well in his car...

Gave the blanket to my friend Joe for his Nova.I just put the Engine & trans back in yesterday with the new CSI trans sheild:headbang:
