I already told my wife the same thing when I came in from the garage... LOL!
I did find a few other suspicious things though.... I'm not sure if the were a result or the cause of the trans failure...
First on the list, The two bolts that hold the trans tail mount to the trans were missing. The tail was resting in its correct location, just no fasteners holding it in place!
Secondly, the front U-joint had a cap fly out of the yoke! I found the inside clip lying inside of the yoke / joint area kinda stuck in there... Not sure how a clip comes out, but it was not attached to the missing U-Joint cap!
That's all.... No other signs of failure anywhere else.
Perhaps the bolts came loose and worked there way out of the mount a while back and was never noticed. Then the failure of the U-Joint slinging the cap out caused a severe and immediate vibration cracking the bellhousing?
Maybe the U-Joint is completely un-related to the trans failure? It all happened in the snap of a finger! No vibrations or noise leading up to the big BANG!

I sure like the looks of that bellhousing! NICE!!!!!!
If I could find a used one somewhere that would be nice, but I doubt I ever would.
I think there almost 400 dollars new aren't they?

Hell with it! I'm going to look this thing over real close, and if I see nothing else damaged on the trans, I'm buying a new JW bellhousing by the weeks end!
Even if it doesnt work out with this trans, I have a real nice offer to purchase one CHEAP!

Missing tail shaft bolts is definately the cause of the carnage.Even the damaged ujoint.Pull the tailshaft housing and check the bushings and side play. The damaged ujoint will eat up the back half very quickly!!!!!

They were the trans mount bolts...... Not the tail housing bolts. Not sure if that's what you meant or not, but I thought I would make sure I was clear in the previous post.

All thru this everyday reading the posts, i keep thinking of your time, and that being with this happening, When you first posted about this, I got the impression you, of course wasn't happy, noone would be, BUT your time seemed to please you and i cant stop thinking about it... Now that you found the reason, (narrowing it down) how much more do you think it will do? Providing no more problems... Being its apart ive been wondering if you will change anything, converter/gears... Or keep it the way it was.. :)

I was seeing the silver lining through the potential demise of an otherwise great engine tranny combo! I have always felt that the car would run some great numbers for a street strip machine, but have had reservations on what the numbers would actually be. The 10 sec field is where I have always hoped to be, and I now know that to be a realistic goal for this car. I am also confident that the 10.67 will be easily improved upon with right traction conditions "caltracs need installed" , tuning, and a carb swap. I really spun during that run when I left, I still need to complete the timing setup that I started and never quite finished, and the carb is way to small..........
I'm not completely sure what I'll get out of these changes, but I would venture to say at least a few tenths are achievable! Just not spinning so bad will get me quite a bit! The carb might be a tenth, and the timing might not show up in numbers on a ticket, but it helps with the mind... LOL!:glasses12:
I plan on getting the drive shaft loops installed, frame ties made, and caltracs installed along with the trans of course. I had planed on replacing the converter with a 4500rpm but those plans have changed now that I'm buying a bellhousing.:angry9:

I wish you luck on it, that drive shaft loop id think a must, ive street raced and ive never been in the 10 doing it, i think the safety equipment a must, but hope you do manage what you want! the converter would make a difference, good combination's with everything im sure folks here can help with, post what happens, i know you will but had to say it! Good luck.

Well, it's ready for the new bellhousing....:hello2:

You are closer than you even know.A little fitting and grinding you are their!!!

You should go through that trans before you buy the superbell.Just make sure that case is in good shape, you never know untill you look.Last time my trans was redone,we found a few cracks:icon_sad:

I looked over the outside closely, and felt for play in the shafts.... It doesn't appear to have any damage that can be determined from outside checks. It was unused from trans shop when I put it in last summer.....
I think at this point, I would have to strip it down to see anything else, and a rebuild kit would cost more than the deal I was offered on a trans with low milage.
I can use the bellhousing on any trans I end up using and get the SFI cert without buying a trans shield.

You would still need a trans blanket to cover the trans. The CSI sheild covers the bell & trans:cat:

I priced the one you have "csr",,,,, costs about the same as the bellhousing! Very nice piece, but I think in my case, the bang for the buck goes to the JW ultra bell.
I found an unused blanket for 50.00 or best offer.
