Tri power carbs on 440 six barrel?

What about this ?
Well...that's a nice setup!
Here's a picture of the Tripower setup on the 421 in my wife's 65 GTO, right after I got them back from being restored and performance modified:

I took the opportunity to block off the heat x-over in the cast iron intake manifold, that seemed to get hotter than any other intake I've ever had. Since I had to replace the intake manifold gaskets and install the metal block offs, I repainted the intake, because the x-over used to get hot enough to burn off the paint, but not anymore. I also had to block the heat x-over as a prerequisite to using the polymer and aluminum carburetor insulator plates, seen here:

The intake got the carbs so hot in the past, the fuel would boil out of the carbs, and it was 100% gasoline, NO ethanol, 93 octane. Now they run much cooler.
I have a new TKO600 going in, and a new rear axle housing coming for the Ford 9" based Quick Performance unit that's in it now, modded for coilover rear suspension and adjustable lower lift bar (LCA) brackets to adjust instant center.
Here's one of a few trips down the 1320 I made to try out and tune up the modded Tripower. I had to play with the idle speed, so on this run, it killed after the burnout, but that's what test and tune night is for!

Does the stock six pack air cleaner base clear the fuel line connections on top of the side hung bowls?

my did cause it’s the flat A12 base. A normal one will need some tweaking.

In order to create the clearance needed in between the rear and center carb, will this mechanical secondary carb accept a metering plate in lieu of using a side hung bowl? I’d like to keep all 3 fuel lines on the passenger side and the side bowl won’t allow that. I realize it would give up the ease and convenience of individual jets in the metering block.

no it will not, you’ll have no way to meter the fuel to the idle circuit.

Potential dumb question alert: What if I just use the idle circuit on the center carb? Still no bueno? I was just referring to the outboard carbs.

Hate to say it but Rochester 2 barrels are better over the long haul than Holleys. I have a few friends with 6 pack set ups and they are always messing with the Holley's. The 389 Pontiac guys just start their cars up and cruise. Mopar didn't want GM carbs. I don't blame them. No other choice other than Holley.
I already referenced problems I experienced with the Tripower in our 65 GTO, that is before a major and professional restoration and rebuild, and I actually had the restoration, including "replating" repeated by the guy I should have sent them to the first time around, when he did much needed performance based internal modifications. Many others had problems as well, to the point where one guy who is very active in the Pontiac hobby, said "all Tripowers leak fuel" which I did NOT accept as reality.
Anyway, one of the common adapters that I see a LOT of do the opposite of what is suggested in the above quote. There are a number of companies that offer adapter plates to put Holley 2bbl carbs in place of the Rochesters, and even offer mechanical linkages to serve that purpose.
I'm happy with the way our Rochesters work, look, and don't leak now, but I've never had those kinds of problems with my Holley 2bbl carbs.

You could always use a set o GM outboards, then you would only have the center to contend with!

I’m only checking because these new carbs are 1/2 the price of the used vacuum Holleys for Mopar.

The trouble with trying to save one Buck is that it usually costs two Bucks to do it.....not counting the aggravation.

And if you want the current sixpack carbs that Holley is selling,I wouldn't wait too long. I got it from a "very" reliable source at Holley that in the near future they will be phased out. Now,I don't know what near means, just saying.

ABSOLUTELY TRUE.....words of wisdom....perhaps Sonny will rethink his position and just buy what he wants/needs and just enjoy the car and forget about trying to put "a square peg in a round hole" both literally and figuratively.....

I don’t disagree with your thinking. So far I have all 3 new Holley 2300 carbs (325 cfm center and 2 350 cfm outboards) mech linkage, 1 side hung bowl, new Edelbrock intake, and an assortment of -6an fittings all in for $1500. That’s less than 3 new Mopar carbs and/or used ones that are risky and need rebuilding alone. 3 new Mopar vac carbs plus intake is over $2200.

I realize the carbs I chose are less cfm than the Mopars too. I did this because my 1978 low compression 440 likes 650 carbs over 800 carbs and it’s not a race car. I think from a drivability standpoint it may perform better with these lower cfm carbs.

Lastly, this is a Belvedere road runner clone. Not trying to represent a perfect graveyard cars resto, just a fun car! Solving issues is part of the fun for me. Thanks for all the input! Was very useful. I’ll send a video and total cost once I get it all together.

I'm impressed that you are willing to give "the road less travelled" a shot. Let us know how it goes, and what kind of problems you run into. Frankly, I've got a sixpack manifold here that's begging for some carbs. Good luck with your project!

I'm interested to see how it works out, keep us updated.
