I have a 440 six pack build in a 70 Charger with the 240 Trickflow heads and would prefer to keep the HP manifolds.

I ran into some issues and would like to know if anyone has some experience with the install of these heads on 440s.

I tried to install champion plugs and ran into interference issues when the 13/16 hex rubbed against the aluminum casting and I couldn't keep the socket on long enough if I wanted to install the plugs all the way.

An engine builder installed the heads. I have to look for the paperwork if there is a factory recommendation. Next call Trickflow....

Everything looked good to go until the spark plug issue. I called Trickflow during my research. I was under the impression you could install the HP manifolds on these heads and that the plug would allow plug wire clearance. It seems I can't use the champions. I have read forums that NGKs? will work?

Does anyone have the HP manifolds installed on these heads? What plugs did you use? My engine has 10:1 compression.

What plug heat range advice?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm at the end of the install and want to crank this engine up.....

Thanks in advance!

Use NGK BCP5ES plugs. They have the smaller 5/8" hex. If it was my engine, I would pay extra for the Platinum or Iridium equivalent.

The aluminium heads all use a 3/4 inch reach plug with a sealing gasket like a Champion R12YC.
These plugs have a 5/8 inch hex.

I have just purchased Pro Maxx heads that have angled spark plugs so I guess the cast iron manifolds will not fit.
They also raise the exhaust port 300 thousands so that alone could be a problem.

That sounds like a good suggestion. I haven’t contacted Trickflow yet but I do know that a 5/8” plug is definitely going to be a requirement. I’ll check availability for these plugs and the NGKs.

I have seen posts about using NGK plugs. I’m not if they have the seal or if it’s recommended by Trickflow. If they do work and someone has a heat range suggestion for the plug with 10:1 compression that would give me options. I know autolites I have used in the past don’t have washers.

These 240 heads are the same port dimensions for the exhaust and intake ports so the manifold will bolt on I’m just not sure about plug wire clearances. Edelbrock RPM heads claim their heads do have angled plugs but have enough clearance for plugs and wires with stock HP exhaust manifolds.

I was hoping someone on FBBO had done this before and could comment. I will call Trickflow Monday.

Appreciate any responses.

I would think a wager would be ideal to keep from maring or damaging the aluminum

The other aluminum angle plug heads seem to work with manifolds okay. I believe one cylinder (#5?) is more challenging than the others. I think some plugs are a little shorter too and that helps. This is all second hand info for other heads. Take it for what it’s worth.

Factory HP Exhaust Manifolds

Plugs 5 and 7 with the Edelbrock E Street 5090 75cc Angled Heads

Went with Ceramic Plug Boots from Pertronix on 5 and 7 , they work awesome

NGK Heat Range 6 - NGK 6962

10.4 to 1 Compression

Zero issues with installation or removal of spark plugs

Not familiar with the angle of the Trick Flows

I am running tf240 heads with hp manifolds on my 440 with ngk bkr5e plugs with dei titanium slip on sleeves on 5 and 7 cam was custom ground for the manifolds it runs strong. Plug wires are Firecore 8mm with 90 degree spark plug boots.

Also using Remflex 6002 gaskets between heads and manifolds

On my SB trick flows, I had to go one step further with my spark plug socket, had to trim just a little off the diameter to fit into the plug hole.

Please explain the dei slip on sleeves. The plug inserts through a heat protector sleeve?
If you have a picture that would be great.

I have heard of someone using BKRE6E-11. Is this similar except a different heat range?
Do these plugs have a seal washer?

What compression are you running?

Your camshaft was custom ground?

Thank you

I am running 10:1 compression. The sleeves are just the slip on 1800 degree ones. Trick flow instructions say autolite 3924 I like the ngk’s the 5 or 6 in the ngk is the heat range. The 5’s seem to be working good. As far as the cam a called Bullet racing cams and the specd out and ground the cam.

Also I have been running 90 octane ethanol free gas around 20 initial and 34 total timing. With vacuum advance on manifold vacuum it’s 30 degrees at idle starts and runs good

Thanks for your help. I have a Chrysler electronic distributor set up according to Direct Connection specs. That’s how long ago I originally built the 440. It’s initial 14 degrees and 34 total. The motor ran great 30 years ago but I couldn’t keep it from detonating last five years or so. No more access to octane.

I have Hughes cam and roller setup. First time at that.

I now have an MSD distributor I will try after I break in the motor.

Thanks for the picture. That helps a lot.

Did you use 90 boots or straight for 5&7? I’m sure I will have to make my own set of wires.

Did you put any antiseeze on the plug threads?

I called Firecore he made me a set and they fit nice. Ngk says no antisense so that’s what I am doing ran them like that in newer cars with aluminum heads and have never had a problem, I am sure it wouldn’t hurt to add a small amount if you want

You wouldn’t to have a contract number for Firecore would you? That would save a lot of time. The custom crimp tool is expensive too for a one time use.

The NGK PLUGS you mentioned look longer than the original ones. They are different than the stock J11Y plugs?

Do the Trickflow heads allow a longer thread?
