Does anyone know if there are any markings on a LA engine (340 specifically) that indicate what car it came out of? I know it was in a Dart for a while, but that was it's second home. I didn't see any such markings, but maybe someone out there knows otherwise. Thanks.

You can use the vin stamp on the lower pass side of the block by the oil pan, it will tell you plant and year the car came from. You can kinda ball park it based on sequence number. I had to do this with my 340, finally figured out it was from a 70 duster

Engine number is stamped on the LF of the block just below the head gasket. Then Google the stamping number.

I have always been a Big Block/Hemi guy but I did just pick up this 340 short block up earlier this week from a guy at work.

Well the 2780930 number is a general stamping for any 340 block casting; the number below the head gasket is engine build info... so neither of those is relevant for determining which model then engine went into. Now the number above the oil pan... I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the info Tim.

Original Vehicle VIN number should be stamped on the Block Deck that sticks out just in front of the driver's side Head.

It should be the last 8 of the vin which includes the year and plant.(first two digits) I did have to reach out to one of the registery keepers once I figured out what I was looking at and he told me based on the sequence (the last 6 of the vin) it was probably from a duster.

that's what it should look like. sorry for the delay, i moved all my photos to my laptop and accidentally left it at the office this weekend. (note mine is funky because there was a busted digit on the dial. the missing digit is a 4 i believe.)

I'll check that out as soon as I get my block back. It's out for Magnaflux and machining right now.
