Vintage Kendig Carburetor

We ran a predator..I think it was cheaper made then the one you have. It was instant balls if adjusted right!
On a mild 440 in a 70 challenger it picked up 3 tenths at the track over a edelbrock carb. 14.0 to 13.7 and gained 4 mph. But some of that gain was we had to leave the hood off because the predator was so tall!!!!Lol
Still... 4 mph 97mph to 101mph is impressive.
We then put it on our 510 with 4.88s and slicks and it left like we had a 4000 stall..but we only had a 2200. We also immediatly cleaned the spider gears out of our 8 3/4.

The valve inside that regulated the fuel was a plastic POS. We put the predator on a olds 455 the POS plastic piece let the engine fill up with gas and it bent a rod.Lol
So..beware. we had fun..till we had to pull a engine apart to change a rod.Lol

Thanks for the opinions! I believe I will pass on running it...for now anyway. The engine on the stand right now is a bone stock 440-6 with a performer rpm in it for break-in... don't want to wash it down with a goofy old carb.
Ya....i'd save that to try out on a running junkyard engine. Once you have a better seat of the pants feel for it.....you can go from there (and educate us).

That is no large feat

Could probably make a carb at home and get the same results

I have been running one for years and it flicks my truck’s good manners into a light switch if not careful on the throttle. Anything over 1/4 throttle and it’s party time! Dr. Jeckyll at idle and Mr. Hyde if you slip up. it runs all year long and even at -40º it wants more. These were known for their excellent fuel efficiency if set up properly and the opposite when not.

If you cut a hole in 1/8” aluminum sheet and drill holes where the bolts go, it can be offset any direction on top to position where needed. Put the center carb bolt where needed to fit your cleaner to this base.

People are baffled, but 1250 cfm is 1250 cfm with throttle response NOW!

I'm sure there are tens of thousands of guys running Kendigs and Predaters on their hotrods, to pick up a half second each.
It just seems strange to me that I haven't seen one of them for about twenty or thirty years.........

The Predator throttle response was terrific under a load.

The dependability was epicly bad.
Big reason why you don't see them is they are either broke or still new in the box! If you were lucky you didn't toast the motor w they broke.
:popcorn2:

always wanted to play with one of those... i like oddball stuff though

Around the year 2000,at South Mountain Dragstrip there was a guy who raced a 1970 (I think) Dart with a supercharged 440 with dual Predator carbs. I don't remember his times but I know that car hauled a*s.

Man i want a blower soo bad :)
Speedmaster had 6-71 blower kits (including big and small mopar) for 35% off, for black friday/cyber Monday. Around $4000 for the mopars
Would still need carbs, throttle linkage, and other misc.
Nothing for poly's though.
(I thought about a kit for my Opel/bbc, but not for very long).

Ten or twelve psi is easy with the right pulleys, if that's what you want. When you try to get up around 15-20 lbs, they get a bit inefficient.
No such thing as a cheap blower kit anymore. Even the little toy mini blowers are over three grand.
Now, a Chinese turbo kit is another matter! (Seen em fairly cheap for a small mopar. Haven't found a cheap one for a bbm.)
(Now that the sale is over, a bbc kit is $1900 less than a sbm kit.. Mopar tax indeed.)

Ok, firstly the Kendig must not be confused with any other variable venturi carburetor. It has no accelerator pump, no fast idle function, no jets, and no plastic parts other than the top door backfire flaps which reset themselves after every upset. The internals are all metal and precision fit. To rebuild one is straightforward if necessary at all. It is labeled "Pollution Control Industries" because of its ability to reduce emissions and increase mileage by up to 50%. This carb has substantial pedigree and is very satisfying to drive. When you finally try one and get to know it better, then you will understand. Until then, those who have never known will just talk.

Ask yourself this. If they were so great why are they not made and sold anymore. The answer is simple.
