Waking up the beast

What drum ,sprag and & planets are you using??

- - - Updated - - -

I'm with Hemi-It is,
I hate being on my back, on the ground anymore,
let alone in the rain outside in the driveway...

that's a nice tranny jack Al !!

The trans will not fit under the car while on the jack.Have to slide the trans under and then lift onto the jack.
Yes

So i'm now going to have the option of installing either a 9.5" or an 8" converter next week. I will keep the 10" and rebuild it so i will have another choice in the spring. At the end of this year I plan on pulling the motor and freshen it up. The trans will be gone through again as well while everything is apart. I still plan on driving the car to the track which is about 20 miles away. Do I go with the 8 or the 9.5?

I would guess 9.5 but I'm not a expert.

bob I would do a lenny 9.5,took two tenths off my 10.0 converter no questions asked!

Hey, what's up Pete?
I'm really curious to see what an 8 " would do for me though.

I would say you may like it,but do you have the top end to keep with the rpm,s as the converter does not lock up as you rev higher ,does not work that way.had a good rep brand name not off the shelf converter:which I belive was;slip at high rpm's and through the traps was not pulling anything.i can't dis a co. from my experience, but lenny has talked my through my problems and you have seen my time slips in your hands personly to see the results as fact by two tenths with nothing in the factor!

Good point. If I don't put the 8"in, the curiosity is going to kill me. I have a few days to make a decision. I'm sure youre right and should go with the 9.5.
Now its tea time!

I would definintly have a beer, but I taken my trans out for broken tailshaft from a poly mount and say that you think thev better rpm is the better, too much may be excesive and that is where you say that that is ok;excesive is always not the answer -you think is better but no better and is just a dream because you thought it be correct.do the 9 inch and rubber mount and leave as you always have, you will be happy.remember in 85 degree heat,i thought I was going to pick up a lot and found my et the same in 80 degree heat as my 10 inch in 68-you can't compare-with the same temp no doupt 11.70 and below with 3870 lb car.

Maybe I'm just lucky . I'm careful in the burn out box. Stock low roller, never broken a tail shaft. 170 9.2-9.3 passes on the current trans.

What is careful? Not being a smartass, I don't really know. What would be the best way to do a burnout?I've gone through 2 sprags and a converter now. Is it me or my luck?

Make sure when you come out of the water that you're off the throttle. If you hold on until it chirps the tires It's tough on the converter sprag. I ran my other car over 500 passes on the same converter w/o issue. Let my buddy drive it one weekend, ruined the converter.

Rolling out of water lifting the foot is key.... Also being in second gear is important...

I start off in first gear and immediately shift into second. Is that ok as long as i'm off the throttle before it bites?

Most non reverse breaking VB manufactures suggest that if you can start off in second while in the water, then you should.... However, they also say if you can't get them spinning starting in second, then do as you suggested..... Shift into second as soon as possible, and ease off the gas about the same time you let off the brake to make a smooth exit from the water box...

Wow, 51 years old and still learning how to do a burnout. Who would have thought I would need to go to test n tune for burnouts? Thanks for the info.

I've been doing burnouts as above since 1980 and never broke a trans or converter. Never used high gear.
Call Lenny and discuss you 8 vs 9.5 situation. He will enlighten you...

Start in 2nd, shift into high, 3 seconds, let go of the line lock button when it moves a foot or so lift off the throttle.

Let's try this again.

Yup, it's an 8". I have a 9.5 being made but isn't here yet. Valve body is an A&A reverse pattern manual w/low band apply
