What’s a phrase that your parents used years ago

I would say something to my Grandfather when I was young.
He would reply( you don’t say). Took me a few years to figure that one out.

Basically means "kids asking sugar coated questions", a phrase my dad would use when exasperated by continual nuisance questions by us kids.

Years later I figured out that it was because Mom was a poor speller. Her advice was a diversion from saying "I don't know".

Fortunately I rarely got that one.
