Being that we have a large collection of members that build, race and understand engines I pose this question....

IF you wanted to build a killer BB (No Hemi's and over 550 hp) but wanted to keep it streetable what would you build while keeping $$$ in mind. Have at it:icon_idea: Be specific and explain why you chose what you did.

I'm always conscious about cost of building an engine so I always look for new or slightly used parts from individuals selling at 50% off of new cost or better. For example, I bought a set of 400 dollar Isky rockers new in the box for a hundred bucks at a swap meet. I also have my own small machine shop and that helps save a ton. With that, taking weight off the car will do wonders for a mild street motor too. You can save a lot on the motor by doing a lot of little weight savings all over the car but if you don't have the proper tools to do some of this stuff, you're at the mercy of buying everything you need to go fast..

you know what, cranky's right. if you are building one to be a driver he is right. But if you are building 1 for your self, have a grin. there is only one first time.:headbang:
 
I agree too, there is nothing wrong with bargin parts as long as they are in excellent condition.
 
No one has a dream wedge they would like to build???
 
You said 550hp thats not much more than factory rebuild if parts selection is smart.From my personal research and experience 505"motor with long rods is untouchable.RB block,4.25 crank,7.1 rod,flat top or dished piston(depends on use and head)and hydraulic roller cam.My next bracket motor will be a 512 with m/w indy ez,roller cam,13to1cr easy 725 hp+ You are looking at less than 9grand.
 
My next build is a 400 with 440 rods and stock 400 stroke, eddy rpm heads, Weiand tunnel ram intake. Hopefully I can keep my 66 Belvedere just below 3000 lbs.

You must lie revin them to the moon.Short ashtray pistons and tunnel ram = 7000rpm shift points:headbang:

Cranky, are you saying a 400 block and stock 400 crank with the 440 rods? Any major machining besides cleaning them up? Also what cube will that give you? Thought everyone did a 440 crank and rods and went for the 451 inch motor. Curious though as I will eventually build a budget stroker. Thanks.
 
It will still give you 400ci,but the long rod gives you a very short piston.This will greatly decrease recip weight and decrease piston drag.It will increase your rod ratio wich usually increases hp.The idea less weight and drag to increase hp with rpm.It works very well,but for short periods of time.Dual purpose motor it is not,well lets say not for the average joe.Alot of old 4 speeders used this setup to turn them 8000rpm.In the local detroit area their was a few around setup like this.

I cannot build a motor...I would buy a short block or whatever.

BUT wish I had the time, talent and tools to do so...oh yea, and

So out of what has been suggested what would the best route be? I know that the 400 has the largest bore so figure on a 400 block for starters and build from there.
 
I built my dream wedge. I always had to build budget engines but after I got divorced 2 years ago I decided to build the eng I really wanted. I wanted my 63 to drive to the track and then run 10's on pump gas and drive home all this thru the full exh. So here is what I built:


Its a 493 which is a .030 over 440 block with the 440Source 4.15 crank stroker kit with dished pistons. I studed the mains and use steel main caps and had it all lined bored. I use Indy EZ heads ported to Max Wedge size and cut a tad for 10.6 comp as I wanted it to run on 92 pump which it does as I built a nice .045 quench. Hughes 1.6 roller rockers and I had Dwayne Ported custom grind a solid flat tappet cam for me of 264 and 270 @ .050 with .634 lift using the 1.6 rockers. Has a 110 LSA and I installed it at 106 CL. I use the Indy dual plane intake which works great. Carb is an 850 DP and a Mallory dist wih the MP orange box. I use TTI 2" headers and their complete 3" exh with X-pipe. Its in my 63 Sport Fury with a 9.5 Dynamic converter and 4.30's with a 30 x 9 tire. Drove it to the track once so far and it ran 11.04 @ 121 running bad as it was still to lean bucking at the top of the gears. I know it should run easy 10's next time out when I jet up some more. It drives great as I drive it all over. I drove it the 180 mile round trip to Carlisle in July right after the eng was done. I spent a good 7k in all the parts and built it myself but I have the eng I have always wanted. Ron

well i have me a 440 block punched .060 never been built before sitting in the basement one day it has a date with all forged internals and extra long stoke and maybe forced induction and a lil spray only bc iv never used it b4 hehe
