What is the general consensus of having a new fender tag made by Govier?

Just curious what the community thinks of the practice of building new fender tags.

I have a 68 GTX, 440hp/4spd car that’s very nicely optioned. But it’s missing the original fender tag, I thought I had a line on the original by reaching out to previous owners and one owner swore he thought he took it off and should have it but unfortunately has been unable to find it.

I did however hit the jackpot by finding the BS under the rear seat. With the BS I was able to match it against the VIN of the car and was also able to match the SON against the body stampings.

With this I reached out to Galen Govier who said that should be enough to certify it, put it on the registry, and create a new fender tag for it.

Now, I’m not out here to try and pass the tag off as original, but I’m the first owner to actually care about documenting the thing and given the options I think it’s a car very much worth documenting. But as I search through the forums and google I see a lot of people despise the practice of making new tags.

So is it just frowned upon all together, or, is it accepted when going to someone like Govier and having all the documentation to back it up?
 
GG doesn't make fender tags, last I heard, anyway.

Check out AG Backeast, located in Grand Junction, Colorado. With the build sheet, proof of ownership (wither a copy of the title and/or registration), and $$$, they'll make you a near-perfect fender tag.
 
If you are having all the documentation to back the car up - why would you need an aftermarket (not original) tag at all?

To me it’s redundancy, yes right now I have all the documentation to back up the car, but life happens sometimes and you never know what’s going to happen.

The BS is going on 60 years old, it’s worn and tattered, I removed it, took a bunch of photos, framed it and put it in my safe. But god forbid there was ever a fire, natural disaster, stolen, etc that’s all I have backing up the car.

So my thought, while I still have everything, is to reach out to a reputable source and get it documented. GG certifies it, it goes on his registry, he makes a new tag, now I have multiple points of documentation in the event something happens to one of the other documents.
 
My off the cuff answer is that you will never get it in the mail lol.

lol in my endless days of research this certainly isn’t the first time I’ve heard people say GG doesn’t get back to you.

But I’ve also seen quite a few people say he does as long as your car is interesting and he likes it.

He’s been calling me every single day and sending constant emails, so maybe I just got lucky and he finds it interesting, or maybe I’ll never hear back lol

Hmm, idk I have been talking to them almost daily sending pics and info and we’ve talked in detail about what they can do. They very clearly stated as long as my info checks out they would decode the car, certify it, put in on his registry and then make a new fender tag for it.

But this was all based on the fact I could match the BS to the vehicle VIN and body stamps. So maybe without all of the above he just doesn’t do it.
 
I would do it if the cost is reasonable,,,,

In talking with them they said they would decode the car and give me a list of options and rarity of it against the others on his registry, then certify it and add it to the registry, and lastly create a new tag for it. The quote was about $500 for all of the above. Seemed fairly reasonable to me.
 
16+ years I've been waiting on GG to make me a fender tag and send me my SuperBird documentation.

Just get Dave Wise @ MMC Detroit (www.mmcdetroit.com) to make you a tag and skip the Govier nightmare.

OH and under no circumstance let GG get his hands on your original Broadcast Sheet...

As in they all need replaced at some point?
Tags get lost for carburetors, distributors, differentials, master cylinders, keys get replaced. If the car is legitimately what it is professed to be, I see no reason to assume that any part is replaced to defraud. OEM vehicles seldom have original gaskets or other soft parts. Once a car has been worked on, it is no longer a "survivor" and anything after that is a rebuild of some sort. OE Certification is purely judgmental to "today's", "fluid", standards. All this has changed over the years and will continue to change. The quality of a vehicle should be judged by effort. I see so many "restored" cars with aluminum radiators and Interstate batteries. My reproduction battery is fake with an AGM inside but is acceptable for OE judging.
 
I remember a time back in the 80’s... my ‘Cuda, E87 D21 was one of the few that had N96 on the tag, and the shaker. Now it seems like they all do.:D
 
No problem with getting a tag made. Most will be able to see it is a repro.
Just don't deal with G.G. if you do I would say don't cry afterwards as you've been warned.
 
Don't waste your time with Govier. He doesn't make tags and his authorization doesn't mean much, imo at least. I bought a car 10 years ago that he had documented. What a joke. I could have done just as good of job.

Yes how can a guy certify a car from just the paperwork? He cannot that’s how.
