What is the general consensus of having a new fender tag made by Govier?

Its interesting that every time this subject comes up there are always those who immediately start with the word "fake" trying to make the case that a replacement tag is a "fake" tag. Well using that logic perhaps your tires, paint, engine, clutch, brakes are all "fake" as well.

The reason this comes up at all or is a "thing" is because all of the purists, experts, investors, and general haters have made it a thing. When someone comes up with a new vehicle one of the first questions is about the fender tag and the Broadcast sheet, ergo these items have been made "important" and thus those without them feel that they need them to be complete. Seeing that getting a broadcast sheet is pretty difficult thats pretty much out but a fender tag is definitely possible.

I will say this, many of this very high end high dollar restorations floating around various collections and across auction blocks have replaced fender tags. Some people admit it, others not so much.

I'm surprised the manufacturers don't take the lead on this issue? I would think it would be in the best interest of Chrysler to regulate plate/VIN replacement? But with Fiat at the helm? I wouldn't hold my breath.

I agree with most of that except the Broadcast sheet. All Mopars came with a fender tag that matches the car. The Broadcast sheet was for the line workers, and not meant to be included with the car.

Get the new tag made. It will be that last piece of the puzzle to complete the car restoration.

Save your $500. Decoding is easy.

My personal opinion is that a Mopar doesn't look complete without that plate, especially when the rest of the car is done to a high standard. It is likely one of the first things that other Mopar owners look at. It's like showing up at a show with just 3 hubcaps.

A repro tag without any backup does at least partially suggest a potential embellishment of the options a car was built with.

The tag "proves" the existence of "desirable" options on a particular car.

It's fairly easy to take a low option RR in a mundane color, ditch the factory tag. and create a VIN legitimate RR with all the options you want.

A repro tag with a backup of the actual VIN matching build sheet is FAR less suspicious, and in actuality, does not matter.

It IS fun to take a look at the tag on any car to see what options it came with.

Oh wow, so the feeling towards GG on here are pretty mutual. I have no attachment to GG and more than happy to go elsewhere. I just wanted to do it right.

In my effort to document the car while I still have the supporting documents I wanted to go through a respected source. I understand the mindset “why reproduce a tag when you have the BS”. Put simply it’s just another layer of documentation to me, and yes, it’s nice at a show to look at it and see what the car was optioned out as.

While my intentions isn’t to pass it off as an original tag, I want to use someone the community trusts. So when I tell someone that the tag was made by “X” using a matching BS and body numbers they can trust what the tag is telling them.

That being said, I’ve seen multiple suggestions for companies other than Govier like

- AG backeast
- mmcdetroit

You used reputable and GG in the same sentence. LOL

run Forrest run!

when the fake tag is spotted, then the red flag will be waving, what else is false on the car?

Yes how can a guy certify a car from just the paperwork? He cannot that’s how.

I mean it’s more about getting a stamp of approval from someone/company who is trusted and respected in the community (not saying that’s Govier at this point)

but the fact is I’m a nobody, nobody cares about my opinion. But there are people/companies everyone trusts and agrees with. So if said person/company puts there stamp of approval on the car saying I’ve seen the car, I’ve seen the paperwork, I agree it’s legit, they are certifying the car is real.

Almost 60 years later that’s the best some of us can do since not a lot of people kept good track of the car.

So idk, IMO being able to tell people that “X” reviewed the car and agrees it’s real is a lot better than me just telling people “yea it’s legit”

Nothing wrong with a replacement FENDER tag, just don't give into temptation and add bogus inspector stamps. Hell I didn't even paint mine, as Lynch Road cars were lucky to even get over spray on them anyhow hanging from a visor hole. Here's the one on my Bird, to replace the one that walked at a paint shop in the late 80's. Thankfully I have 1.5 broadcast sheets to back it up and I generally have a copy of that up on the dash, covering the dash pad crack, at shows.

Mine is also a Lynch road car, we’re the tags in a different spot coming from Lynch road?

Funny enough, the previous owner also believes the tag walked off during a repaint of the car.

Lynch Road tags were hung on a wire from the sunvisor mounting holes.. why everyone will tell you your tag must be fake as it's not bent in the corner.. LOL

No personal experience but I believe Dave Wise has a good reputation for documenting Mopars.

My 70 Road Runner is missing the fender tag. But I also never found a BS. All the number match though: VIN, core support, trunk lip, engine & transmission. Having said that, there is no way I can reproduce the fender tag so I haven't and I won't. That would be fraudulent. I have to just "prove" what the car was/is based on pictures.

You are in a different situation. With your BS, you can reproduce the fender tag and back it up since you have documentation to prove what options your car had.

I say reproduce it. You are not scamming anyone, and you can prove what is on the fender tag if anyone ever had questions (like if you were selling it).

Just my $0.02

I wouldn't send your original BS to who makes your tag. Haven't read all the posts if someone else suggest it already?

Dave Wise will require Ownership in his name, photo of original build sheet, body stampings, VIN tag, etc...

Apparently, not a single, restorable, 69 Road Runner ever came with Wheel Covers, only with Dog Dish and Road Wheels.

BTW @Aaron.Dieringer , as was just brought up via PM to me to jog my mind... you will be "faking" the gate number and possibly the sequence # on a Lynch Road car... as gate isn't on the Broadcast sheet and sequence may or may not match your BS. With Superbird records it was about an 80% chance we rolled the dice correctly, your GTX about 5% I bet... although I don't know how '68 tags work vs '69/70.
