I have a 72 Dodge Charger, with a 406 stroker from Mopar Performance. It is Running Great, except when i am idling at a stop light. Occasionally the engine kills. My work-around is to put the tranni in neutral when i am stopped. This is annoying. It has been suggested by several people that i get a bigger stall converter. Does anyone know what is a good size stall converter for a 406 stroker with a 727? i have heard 3500. I think that is too big since this is a street only car. 2500, 2700, and 2900 also has been suggested. I THINK, i am not sure, but i think i have a 1700 stall now.

Thanks,
dave

I'm running a tci 2600 stall behind my 406 bb with a decent cam. Where does the power start to come on with your motor?

John,
Thank you for your quick reply.
Your 2600 stall is within the range of everyone else!
I have a 360 stroker bored to a 406, and i have a small block compared to your BB if that makes a difference.

The power is immediate. I give it gas and she wants to go. the specs for my cam are: 288°/292° duration, 0.501"/0.513" lift Hydraulic Roller Camshaft.

Thanks. Now i need to decide which one for my Charger.

Look at the cam, see where it starts making power. Balance that with the heads and intake and it should give you a good idea of where your power band in your engine is. If the cam is rated to start making decent power at about 2500 rpm, then that's a pretty good place to put your stall.

With those cam specs in a B-body I would suggest a 2500-2700 stall speed. You will need a high stall stator to allow enough initial slip to not load the engine with your higher idle speed.
