What Will It Run?

Saturday night test and tune....weather was a little warmer, but air was still pretty good. Made 1 change to the carbs, went down one jet size on the primaries from a 413 to a 410. I also found that I wasn't quite getting the carbs fully open at full throttle, so made an adjustment to the linkage. New personal best:

60' 1.574
330 4.525
1/8 7.019
mph 98.10
1000 9.196
1/4 11.062
mph 119.97

I made three other runs that night, one other run was shaping up to be better, but fell off on the top end:

60' 1.558
330 4.511
1/8 7.009
mph 97.74
1000 9.195
1/4 11.073
mph 119.20

The other runs were [email protected], and [email protected]

Getting so close to the 10's.

Have you had the chance to scale it yet?, car looks great.

I'm assuming the trans linkage issue is solved? Nice runs.

Last night was frustrating at the track. Runs were between 11.39 and 11.99. I could not get the car off the line. Felt like it was spinning with each launch. Last time out when I was running 11.06-09, my 60 ft's were in the mid 1.5's. Last night, my best was a mid 1.7. The car ran good and pulled strong. Here are the changes that were made prior to last night...
1. Installed PCV Valve and oil separator
2. Worked on brakes so I could hold a higher rpm on the converter
3. Installed proper kickdown linkage and the trans.

I had been running rear tires at 18psi, Last night, I lowered pressure each run until I ended up at 13psi. This didn't help with my traction issues.

I am running Mickey Thompson 313 60 15 drag radials with coil overs and ladder bars.

Time for slicks?

13psi seems low for a radial tire.

My heap never left good if I loaded the converter way up. It would just spin.

About 2000-2200 worked best for me, using a converter than would flash 5300.
That was running 29.5 x 10.5 bias slicks, which I ran at 12-12.5psi.

I later ran 9 x 30 radial slicks....... and those worked best at right about 20psi.

3670lb car running high 10’s with one motor, mid-low 11’s with the other.

60’ times mid-low 1.50’s, with the rare 1.4x thrown in. Best ever, a 1.46 which happened once.

I agree with Dwayne, i dont think going that far down with pressure on a drag radial was the correct move.
It just sounds to me that the track surface was crap.
Did you play with burnout duration, or starting line rpm?

For sure the radials need 17-20 psi. Hotter track conditions not only can create slower 60 by traction, power is diminished as well. What shocks are on it?

Competition Engineering triple adjustable.

First trip to the track coming this weekend in my new-to-me 64 330.
10:13 127mph...........................

Here is the set up:

512CID
10.5:1 compression
Edelbrock Victor Heads
Lunati cam .600/.600 106lsa
dual eddy 1407's on a crossram
727 trans with 3000 stall
4.30 gears
ladder bars
competition engineering 3way adjustable shocks
Mickey thompson 315/60/15 drag radials

Car has fiberglass hood and front bumper, lexan windows, back seat delete.

Give me your best guess and I will let the winner know on Monday. No prizes, just bragging rights.

BTW...I'm definitely no expert on the track, I did have a 10 second C6 corvette (manual trans) for a while that I made some passes in though.

Do you have video?
Doug
I don't have video from this past Saturday, below is a link to the live stream a guy did a couple weeks ago. I think this run was my personal best of 11.06. My run is at the 50:50 mark in the video.

I took my 66 Coronet out first time and it did 12.08 and11.85 …… I really didn’t do much to it, added a merge spacer and the back butterflies weren’t opening all the way, maybe 5 degrees off, I adjusted that and went back a couple weeks later in the same weather and it did 11.58 and 11.55. No roll bars so that it. It’s a Coronet 500 with no attempt to lighten it. Smallish cam .520 .541 1.6 rockers 240 trick flow heads. The first time out always seems kind of all over the place. You have lots of potential there.

Update and new personal best. Engine set up remains unchanged. I did make some minor jetting changes. The big change is a new PTC 8" converter. I am still trying to get dialed in to launching with this converter. Below are times from two runs (about 2 months between the runs), If anyone can shed any light on what is going on, I would appreciate it. By comparing the first half of the runs, my 11.031 run seems like it should have been faster, the only change in set up between the two runs was the converter. Weather was very similar...temp and humidity. The only difference there is was the 11.040 run was during a sunny day and the 11.031 run was at night. I have mph'd as fast as 121 with slower et's. Where did I lose a couple MPH and pick up the ET? How do I put them together to get that elusive 10.xx timeslip??? One more big change coming. I have a set of 4.30 gears sitting in my living room (finally going to get the 4.88's out). Appointment is set at the shop for December 17 for install.

Run 1:
60': 1.545
330: 4.492
1/8: 6.992
mph: 97.37
1000: 9.168
1/4: 11.040
mph: 119.45

Run 2:
60': 1.499
330': 4.453
1/8: 6.953
mph: 97.62
1000: 9.144
1/4: 11.031
mph: 118.79

I talked to you at Indy NMCA I think. The 97mph is slow for the 6.95 1/8 mile, should be 99-100mph. With 512ci you should only need 4.30-4.10 gear and 29.5 -30" tall tire. I leave line at 2000 rpm and shift at 6200 with 8" ati converter and 5400 stall, cross the stripe at 6600 and 127mph. The factory crossram makes good low-mid range torque. Also did you lean out the secondary's?

Yes, I believe we did talk at Indy. I did rejet my carbs with 398 secondary's. The 4.30's are coming soon. Hopefully that gets me where I want to be. Comparing the two timeslips, it looks like I am loosing on the big end. Is that because of the 4.88's?

I would say so, What is the rpm at finishline? What rpm are leaving at and shifting at? How tall are your back tires?

Rpm at finish is right at 7,000. Trying to shift at 6,250. Rear tires are 30" tall, I have only launched twice so far with the new converter. I was trying to leave between 2,500 and 3,000. the 1.499 is my best 60' time to date.
