I know Newfoundland, being an island, is somewhat isolated and, with a total population of under 600 000, is not a major market area. Transportation and thus shipping costs are expensive considering the six hour ferry run from Nova Scotia and frequent delays and ferry cancellations due to weather...winds in particular play havoc on the ferry and the trucking industry. Thus, whenever I place an order for auto parts for my projects, I always request a shipping quote. There have been times when I have paid triple the part cost in transportation cost (door hanger bolts for Triumph Spitfire are an example).

Last week I was shopping online for a floor pan and fuel tank for my 67 Coronet and requested shipping quotes from National Moparts in Ontario and Auto Body Specialties Inc in CT. In both cases I provided my complete shipping address including Postal Code. The emailed response from ABS was short and stated "sorry we only ship to Canada and the US" !!! Lol. I responded to the ABS email twice, explaining I was in Canada and provided a geography lesson. No response from them.

This is the third time US companies have refused to ship to my address, twice because I don't live in Canada and the other claiming my postal code was not valid.

I am now waiting for my floor pan and tank, shipped from National Moparts. Anyone else experience similar shipping woes?

Americans are taught very little world history and it would seem they're taught even less world geography and depending on the area its questionable whether they're taught english. Many couldn't find Canada on a map even with the big C-A-N-A-D-A written across it. But one question you might ask is if ABS ships to Hawaii ... its possible they only ship to the "continental" US and therefore the same would likely apply to Canada.

On another note, it looks like you were trying to order from some place close to you. I'm pretty sure there are other dealers out there who would have shipped to you.

I feel for ya. Geography is not a very commonly taught subject in the US.!

I'm not sure where you've gotten your info about what schools teach in America but you are wrong... again...
Your perception of America Stantin must be tainted by maple syrup and too many re-runs of the McKenzie Bros....
Geography is taught from 5th grade social studies all the way into highschool economics.
Now I can't verify that every American commits to memory where Nova Scotia, New Foundland, Labrador or any other insignificant part of the world is....

I didn't post this thread for people to get nasty...however, it's Newfoundland (one word) and why you would consider my homeland and birthplace be an insignificant part of the world is just wrong. We (Newfoundlander's) pride ourselves on being compassionate friendly people who would go out of our way to help anyone...and Gander, 95km from where I live was an alternate landing site for the space shuttle and played a major role in looking after hundreds of Americans in the days after 9/11 (You have a great Avatar). We were also the location of American bases during WWII. I have travelled extensively in the US and have been in over 30 US states (including Hawaii). I have met and socialized with lots of Americans, and consider them friends.

Many companies only ship to the lower 48 and mainland Canada. Even Alaska is off limits for a large portion of parts companies. Most of these companies also have contract shipping via Fedex and UPS. This fixes the price they pay vs what you or I would pay as an individual for a similar sized package. Even though you may have a FedEx or UPS hub in your area when they enter your postal code in their internal system it will come back as not valid because the contract they pay FedX or UPS does not include delivery pricing to remote or overseas locations. One solution for you, may be to get a PO box in Nova Scotia or make arrangements with a reputable parts house or resto shop on the mainland that is willing to except your deliveries. Then you can pick up your parts there and handle the last leg yourself. Its a PITA solution but it may be your only option

Nova Scotia has some beatiful places..just watch out if you go to Halifax

You're probable right since there have been times I had to provide a "Gander" address to have items shipped. Makes sense that my postal code, a rural location (not remote in the sense of being cut off from most services), isn't in the system for UPS (I do get FedEx packages delivered to my house). Another problem I have encountered when shopping online and selecting Canada as the country is that Newfoundland wasn't on the drop down menu when having to select a province. In both of these cases I phoned the company and the issue was resolved and shipment made to me. As for a Nova Scotia address, if I had to travel to Nova Scotia for parts ( 7 hours drive and then the ferry crossing), I probably would drive on to Maine and save even more on shipping. I know of people who have set up delivery in Maine and other northern states so they can pop across the border and pick up items.

Rocky this was not meant to disrespect Canada or ,your birthplace... It was a jab at Stantons continual insults and ignorance regularly displayed here of my country... It was tounge and cheek...
My apologies to my northern buds, wasn't dis'ing Canada.
I didn't know the rules on calling some one a dumb a@$ or a douche bag. for throwing out stupid collective assumptions and so I figured this might be best...

No problem ... all is good.

Time for a musical interlude...:D

Now simmer down boys.

I clearly remember Newfoundland being a welcoming landing site for stranded travelers during the 911 crisis. Canada in general is a very welcoming place and being from Minnesota a border state I've been there many times. I always say when I travel to Asia in particular i always welcome the experience of running into and spending time with Canucks and Australians. I find those 2 nationalities amongst the friendliest. But we Americans are taught geography and the English language in school and at home contrary to some opinions. Aye!

Oh and some of us can see Russia from our house....

We learnt geografee at an yung age. I can tell yoo wear Mars, Pluto, and Jupiter are on any nite.

Hey Rocky,

Is calling somebody from Newfoundland a "Newfie" offensive? Just curious...
