Who has MOVED from their home state ? How difficult was it for you?

Also....paper maps!
Try to find one at a gas station! Everyone used a phone or their car navigation system but I like paper maps. They are real, they don’t need batteries and they give you proper scale.

Same here. I've got a stash of them for many states in the country.

I have a few funny (to me) stories about my South.
On a trip back "home" to Ga. I stopped off at a country store but the modern type, like a convenience store out in the sticks. I had lots of jams, jellies, coffee mugs, tourist stuff. It was on what had become major highway so had plenty of tourists but not like stuff along I75. The lady behind the counter was a well dressed. proper looking, and very nice looking mid aged lady, not a kid. As I walk in she said "good afternoon sir" I replied back.
I noticed a family of five going over the tourist stuff and she replied "Let me know if i can help you all." They did not reply back.
They leave and I see their car sitting right in front of the store with a Northern tag.
The lady behind the counter looks at that tag also and out of her mouth comes " Damn Yankee!"! Not any thing you could think would be said by such a well dressed and proper looking Southern lady! I bout cracked up!!!!!

Of course it goes without saying, when you are checking out these different potential locations, check out the local cuisine too. Especially the BBQ!

I keep noticing small differences.
My internal compass is out of whack. The same thing happened when I was in Florida back in 1991 or whenever it was.
In California even when away from a familiar area, I could tell North, South, East and West almost by feel. At night or in overcast I was a little bit off but my sense of direction was great.
Yesterday I drove route 9 thinking I was heading North but later while looking at a map, I had gone southwest. Huh?
I’m further south on the planet than Sacramento and obviously further east but I wonder why I can’t reconcile the proper direction.

Rand-McNally for the win! Love my big ol' Atlas.
I still have folding maps of the immediate nearby states myself - and I bet 95% of those I randomly ask
around here couldn't read one to save their lives.

I have talked to random strangers all of my life. That part will require no adjustment at all.
I am a busy dude though. I move fast, I react fast and I am not one to stand around. That would require some adjustment!
Don't get me wrong - I still drive errrr, "briskly" and I do occasionally get a bit miffed at the wandering masses....
it helps to imagine them as being someone's dad or mom, sister or brother, GF or GM. I ease up on 'em then.

Like I said: manners are used - and EXPECTED 'round here. :)

I lived in Georgia once, even married my 1st wife down there. Nice people but I found them to very clanish. I've been in Oklahoma now for 27 years and it is a very nice place to live. Low property taxes , reasonable property values and lots of things to do. Yes we have tornadoes but just about every state has a natural threat.

We've got some good friends out yonder. They tell us our part of TN is similar to where they are in OK,
only a little more temperate with the climate thing.

My neighbors place just sold to a couple from California. It is a 25 year old brick ranch style 2400 sq ft. On 10 acres for $210,000. Seems to be happening more and more around here. It's got to be the low taxes and conservative lifestyle.

I would guess they sold their house 1200 sqft house on less than a 1/4 acre in California for over a million and paid cash for the house in Oklahoma with 2400 sqft and 10 acres.

We are spending the night here in Murfreesboro at a Comfort Inn. Had some pretty good Mexican food up the road. I was apprehensive about eating food from some guys suitcase but it seemed okay.
(Not true)
On to Cooters place tomorrow. We are going to come up with a “fluid” plan tonight and Tomorrow regarding where to look. Soddy Daisy, Maryville and points East if there are areas we want to see.
More observations...
Three days in Georgia May not be a full picture of the climate but what we did see of the weather was not all that great. I can take heat, the humidity wasn’t too bad but I am not a fan of extended overcast skies. Maybe I am spoiled in CA. I love the sunshine. I’m used to what seems completely normal to me: cold winters with some clouds, some rain and summers with almost no rain and pretty much clear sun for months on end.
It will sound funny but as much as I like the sun, I do occasionally long for a summer rain day.
The last three days were mostly overcast with occasional heavy rain. The sky never fully cleared.

As we drove north to Tennessee, as if a sign from the almighty shone down from above, the sky parted and let beautiful sun shine on us.....then a brief but heavy downpour came along on hwy 24, leading to a wreck and 20 minute slowdown.
Ooof.
I know that the cost for all this green grass and trees is year round rain. In CA, the hills are brown by April and don’t green up until maybe December.
I’m not deterred yet. If this state has more sun than a Georgia did than that is a good sign.

A little less humidity, more sunny days - yep, especially in the higher elevations of the eastern half.

Your not going to get a good feel in weeks, spring rain is still here. Typically July is when we go full blown summer, it's sunny and beautiful up until October after that.

We're probably going to be crossing paths, we're in Kentucky directly north of you headed for Pensacola in the morning.

Another observation:
People seem slow to react when the traffic light turns green. I’m driving a slug of a small SUV and I’m out of the hole before everyone.
That's OK
the people in the south probably think
you're a Yankee anyway
weird accent, you talk & drive too fast,
always spinning your wheels & going nowhere
always in a rush :poke:
God forbid they find out you're from California
even semi-rural Granite bay/Folsom area (Sacramento)

they'll just tell you 'Well Bless Your lil' Heart'
sort of the polite southern way of saying to you
'**** off, dumb ****', even when they insult you it's nice

sorry didn't mean to go off track

Hope you're having fun down there
I love being in the south, most the people are awesome

too bad it's so fucken' humid & too many
Thunder/Lightning storms, Tornados, Hurricanes & Rain

I still loved visiting thou

The rental car has a Nebraska license plate....Maybe they think I'm a corn farmer?

Will you be looking around further east too? The area around Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia is nice.

Oh, you want sunny days. Texas has more sunny days than Tennessee. Try the Texas Hill Country on your next trip. For example, the New Braunfels area and the rural countryside. It's not as moist as the weather east of the Mississippi river.

It's really hard to beat the weather in your home state. Good luck with your trips and searches/evaluations. Drive safe!

Yes, the eastern part of the state is very much like eastern Tennessee. Northern Oklahoma has rolling hills like the great plains, western part looks like west texas. We even have a mountain, not very tall but a mountain nonetheless. We have 4 seasons and sometimes weather extremes.

It's not really a big topic of conversation here - honestly.
Now, if you had a Michigan, Florida or NY tag, that'd be different....:)
