I took these on a patrol mission in 1983 or so. We were taking off from NAS Jacksonville, FL, and a frigging sea gull hit the plane just as we climbed past the tower. The guys in the tower didn't see the bird hit, but saw something white fall from the plane and thought it was a panel. They had another of our crews that was flying come over to check us out.

This is a shot of the line of Brits waiting to get a tour of our plane at the HMS Lands End airshow in England in 1982/1983. We had planned to open the plane from 0900-1100, go to lunch, then re-open from 1300-1500, and we ended up going non-stop from 0730 when we got there until just before 2000 that night. :)

Me, sick as a dog, sitting at my station on my second patrol mission with VP-5 in 1980. My stomach had yet to adapt to bouncing around at 300 feet for eight hours. :)
I stripped heating element, ground & blocked, starting in 40 grit to 1000 & polish on an Orion/Electra blade in 06 @ moto art....like connies, half shot peened....bitch to even out for accurate reflection. Hardest cast aluminum batch ive ground to date....because of full reverse, debris scatter worse on blade face....took 15, 8" 40 grit discs and 40 hours.to grind down to bottom of damage, both sides. Then a ton of blocking with long 1/8" thick, flexible aluminum strap, w 40 grit.....Simon Cowell's outfit, 19, (gag)American Idol were the customers, sits in lobby in front of windows overlooking hillsides in lala land.........getting the heating element off was a whore too....kinda funny looking blade sans heat element......like a 7 foot raquet ball paddle. Tried to pull it off catalog but cant get link to take
, this is a "Connie" 'Ham',, no more connies left...no airworthies...no nfg's....done.......did this one pictured and 4 others....

Bruzilla......P-3 is poto on right....center is connie

Large-Propellers-5_0.jpg

No more Connies? What about supers? HB-RSC is still flying in Switzerland. http://www.conniesurvivors.com/N73544.htm Also Lufthansa is restoring one for their own use. http://www.conniesurvivors.com/1-airworthy.htm

I like your reflection in that polish!
Thanks Photon! That was the 1st one i did there. I did the one in ctr of composite photo, on glass topped engine mount, that Donovan is posed with......blade on right i did not do, but that is in Aero Trader @ Chino (CNO)....little ripply imo....as said the one on right is the Orion/Electra.
No i meant the blades themselves.....gone.....when i was @ moto art....a Guy with a Connie resto team....an IA, went through moto's inventory, which was limited, of connies, lookin for blades that could be ground & kept within dimension limits. ...One blade is all He got....very very hard to find even out of limit blades...why moto can get about 18 K for an ensemble. One must turn over a lot of rocks to unearth them at least....a little over 8.5 feet, Hams....only other Ham i can think of close is B-29...i have no clue as to interchangability....i rember the B-50's were around 9 feet......some of those had hollow steel also im pretty sure...i have seen hollow steel blades before.
NOPE....B-29 is over 16 ft dia.....Connie is over 15 ft dia....read over something kwix about 1 bird getting alternate Ham Standard...Australlia or New Zealand........would have to be an STC if they want to certify for pt 91 & carry PAX.....experimental, run what You brung for most part.

How about a turboprop version of the Connie? R7V-2, just four of them built with Pratt and Whitney YT-34P-12A turboprops. The Navy tested them to 479 mph. in a dive, 5700 hp. engines on this bird.

By the way Bladecutter, that Lufthansa Connie I mentioned earlier is getting it's props reconditioned in Canada by Hope Aero of Toronto - six complete propeller assemblies.

I guess these are EC-121...otherwise 749's....what i flew...was a retired TWA Bird. Did You know that both the 1649 Starliner & the DC-7 were 400+ mph in cruise at altitude? No question of the prettier of the two.
Just put on Long Riders....David Carradine nailed His role....

Nope, not EC-121, those birds had the standard Wright 3350. The photos I put up were the turboprop versions.

Lockheed promo film of construction of the Connie:

i know...i meant they are 749 (but after reading, they were 049)airframes....smaller with round cabin windows.....1049 up larger airframes...square cabin windows......1649, last of 1049 variants.
The movie the Aviator....the scene outside on the ramp, TWA birds were AOG, all parked on ramp....problem was that most of those depicted in scene were 1049 Supers....Not period correct....at that time fleet was 749's.
Clay Lacy, after placing 6th in DC-7 in Cali 1000 unlimited x-country in 71 @ Mojave...set up a 1049 Super Connie, dubbed Red Baron, to run friendly rivalry to the Douglas DC-7, Super Snoopy for 72.....but sanctioning banned the airliners from running.....other racers were sniveling about wake turbulence...pussies. DC-7 in 71 avg'd 325 mph, often lowest of pack...winning Sea Fury avg'd 344 mph...only Bird besides Snoopy that did not pit for fuel.
With the 1049 in test runs.....flat out, on the deck, straight sprint, the bird ticked 400 mph.
also, along with the turbine conversions You posted, which are actually 049 airframes...there were also 1049 airframes with turbines to be called 1149 & 1449, but did not make production due to engine reliability,,,, all production Connie variants including 1649 Starliner were the 3350's in different variants.
the first prototype 1049 however was Pratt & Wittney 2800's. the first 1049 Super, seeing airline service was not until 1951...so the Aviator's depicted Birds were NOT period correct....there were many many 1049 sub-variants.....the 1649 had different, longer wings, but fuselage was a stretched 1049....150 PAX

saw on the net last night where they recovered the Thunderbolt. doesn't look hurt too bad. thoughts and prayers to the pilots family.

Hellcats didn't enter service until early '43, well after The Battle of Midway.

Oops.....i stand corrected.....guess i mixed up with F-4-F.....question? Did any of the biplane Curtiss Helldivers make that action.....a favorite.
