Who Likes Aircraft ?

Interesting to note:
Chuck Yeager and some other pilots took the F-104 variant NF-104A to an incredible altitude of 120.000ft
Wikipedia:
NF-104A
Main article: Lockheed NF-104A
Three demilitarized versions with an additional 6,000 lbf (27 kN) Rocketdyne LR121/AR-2-NA-1 rocket engine, used for astronaut training at altitudes up to 120,800 ft (36,820 m).[79]
Yup...Right Stuff......one year at military school,, Yep...(ROTC), bunkie was Yeager's Nephew. I knew of Yeager's alt rec. didnt know the other info
How about Darryl Greemamayer setting low altitude breaking a 1000 mph, in 60's. Miltary would not sell Him a bird, so He built one out of salvage parts. I've seen one turned into a Salt Flats Land speed ride

I had actually read about that a long time ago Jimi
Imagine that everyone?
Build yourself a Military jet from "spare parts"?

too bad he didn't leave Kee Bird to someone else.....

Auggie, You familiar with all the sheet metal sculptures in the Desert around Borrego Springs...Dinoaurs, Horses, jeeps, Coyotes, Stage coaches...Carlos somebody...Rubelli or something.
OK...airplanes thread...this relates...a 58P Beech Baron i did a glass pkg(acrylic) on. Windshield had some crazing that ran about 5 thousandths deep., so an even cut was neccessary. Started in 120....its a long arduous process getting to bottom of damage evenly, not f-ing the optics,,,"speed slopes" are a bitch being all compound curve. shot off wing looking thru interior side shows i kept optics pretty close. all the rest of panes were lightly sanded & polished in & out...plus the four most rearward are double paned....that all came apart & got the massage as well.
The Tip treatment is something i like to do with Baron/Bonanza...painted the cavity in black wrinkle finish,,,sand & polish strobe lite boxes & nav lite lense collars...sand & polish the tip lense.
The pitot tube chrome plating was shot, so i stripped, sanded & polished it.....kind of an old teapot look.
The little prop is a 52", full feathirng Beechcraft Mfg. prop for a Beechcraft Cardinal USN drone...built 2200 units exc. for USN beginning in 1955....all metal, v tail, mcchullogh 2 stroke flat/opposed 6, air cool....made 125 hp.& little bird did 350 mph.

272 foot wingspan, but still not quite this big....a 300 ft wingspan......a football field of wing. Only thing bigger is the Antonov

H-4 Hercules.jpg
H-4 Hercules...thats EIGHT P&W 4360 "Korn Kob" radials..9cylinders X 4 Rows..each engine longer that a living room couch....about 4000 HP per engine. 4360 5.jpg 4360 3.jpg

Well my Dad was a pilot of a B-24 in the South Pacific. But my favorite plane is the P 47 Thunderbolt. Big, fairly fast & eight 50's. Much damage done with 8 50's.

One of My Old Man's Claims to Fame. Martin B-26...same bombload roughly as a North American B-25, around a 100 MPH faster...and the short wings turned tight...Veteran Pilots mixed it up with 109's & 190's. Dad was a test pilot with Douglas & Martin. The letter is from Douglas, accompanying the first set of Test Pilots Wings issued, in 1944. The Martin is highest return rate of any WW ll Combat aircraft....a brick at low speed, ver unstable, very dangerous to idiots......landing speeds were very high, about 135 mph.....about the same as a Boeing 737

My Dad was a pilot flying a B-24 Liberator in the South Pacific in 1943. Not the smoothest plane to fly. He did enjoy the range & bomb load. He had a great crew & came back alive. Only told me a very few stories, which seems to be pretty normal. Those of you that have served, get my un-dying support.

Nah, the new Airlift from Mojave is the biggest

MOJAVE, Calif. — In the high Mojave Desert, the airframe of Paul Allen’s giant, mysterious plane for carrying rockets into space is approaching completion. It has twin fuselages, 95 feet apart, that are joined across the top by a massive wing, 385 feet from tip to tip — longer than a football field including the end zones. With a larger wingspan than any aircraft ever built, the six-engined plane — officially called Stratolaunch — has been nicknamed the Roc, after a mythical Middle Eastern bird so big it could carry an elephant in its claws.
