Here's something that probably hasn't been seen in too many places outside Canada and England. This is a Canadair North Star, which was a variant of the Douglas DC-4 using a DC-6 nose, pressurized and with Merlin V-12 engines instead of Pratt&Whitney radials. The engines were noisy but increased the cruising speed to 325 mph. over the 227 mph. of the DC-4. It maxed out at 353 mph.

The Old Man built a lot of time in DC-4 & 6's. I never knew about this. 30% gain in speed.....due just as much to the pressurization as the engines...getting it in thinner air...i would guess.

The Turbo-Prop is a Pilatus PC-3 isn't it?
I remember back in mid 90's....a really hot Marchetti..think it was P&W PT-6 shaftless, cooked up....plane had an initial climb rate of 9500 fpm. A single engine turbo-prop. How much time does Your Niece have built now?

I don't know either answer (aircraft make or number of hours she has). All I know is that she gets very little time flying the choppers as they don't have enough aircraft and too many pilots. I do know that I would love to fly that turbo-prop plane myself!!!

It's more likely that I'll be flying this soon:

A collection of clips from the Steven Canyon series, 1958 to 1959. The most expensive TV at the time.Enjoy.

I think i remember talking to You about the Bensen....i believe You said it's a McCullough 2 stroke opposed 4?
Know what a Beechcraft Cardinal Drone is? Had a McCullough 2 Stroke opposed 6 that made 125 HP....all metal, full feathering prop, v tailed....did 350 MPH. This is the prop..52", real thin blades. 1st pic is an old ebay ad...thats a fresh, never used the guy was asking 4500.00 for...thing is just about the right size for a gyro-copter...an oil prop. Other pics are the one i have.
.......Yes, that Pilatus would be a total kick in the pants to put on.

That prop would be awesome on a gyrocopter! So would a 125 HP engine. Thanks for sharing!

I'm going to go with a Beechcraft T6-Texan II for that turboprop. 270 knots with that P&W 1,100 hp. PT-6A. But it is based on the Pilatus PC-9.
4.3 M....thats a pricey Bonanza. Instinct was my guess at Pilatus....got that lame duck look like so many pilatipusses do....they are workhorses.....The single engine PC-12 is a very popular corporate, air ambulance, & "off roader" Bird, ///still a homely looker. They have an 'off road' jet too...about the size of a G-400, Citation 10.
spking of off road jets,, i knew a 'cowboy' pilot who operated JATO'd Boeing 727's in & out of jungles. Kept extra underwear in His briefcase.
On PT-6 shaftless gas turbines...like i said, Hamilton was using them for the Twin Beech conversions (Westwind ll)..first gen, 450 SHP...One could literally hold the propeller static during spool up to about 2000 RPM....prop is gas driven via impellers.

I already started blocking the blades on the one i have, have already gone beyond tolerance. check ebay, Guy might still have the ) time one. maybe check listings like Barnstormers.com, Trade a Plane, etc. Since You are experimental. not a STC problem, the flange would be a no brainer to adapt.....see the the little external oil pump? I love the external heim jointed linkage rods too. I want drive the pump with a reversible elec motor, so i can articulate the blades for the static display. The funny thing is that it's full feathering.....normally, only multi engine aircraft have full feathering props.
i just looked.....guy on ebay goes by Cancun Monkey...looks as if its still available. Another try would be
notplanejane.com.

Thanks for the tip Bladecutter! Though I am not proficient enough at this point to start deviating from the basic setup on the Bensen. At this point, my thoughts are to relocate/modify the "stone guard" into a "fixed elevator" on the rudder (close to midpoint of the prop) and trying to figure out if I can eliminate the cable that ties the nose to the rotor head assembly since I won't be pulling it on the ground with a vehicle. Plus I really need to find a guy to give me lessons to fly it (since it is so different from fixed wings that I fly).

I'm not a rotor guy at all..3 rotor flights in life (63) A Hiller when i was about Seven....a commercial commuter from JFK to DC..think it was a big Sikorsky twin turbine deal @ 11 yrs old....& in late 90's, some Friends in an outfit called Heli-Flite, took a ride in Their Sikorsky S-58...holy crap!!....found out why the instrument panel is spring loaded.....all hell busts loose when that bastard spools up.....naw, i'll stick with fixed wing. Those i have talked to past say the Bensen is tricky, twitchy, have to get the second nature with finger tip control...I remember watching a Guy @ Corona fast taxiing day after day, but i never saw Him light off.
I'm interested to know about Your seat, experience, types yat yata.....send me a pm if You care to. i was born into aviation in 53, the Old Man a diverse, multi faceted pilot....well over 40K hrs logged @ Death. Lost logs, unlogged barnstorm time....had His first WACO @ 12 yrs of age.
Don't know if You know what i do with propeller blades.....just finishing up this....an early King Air 90 Hartzell Beaver Tail....plane bellied in dirt...got two blades with pleasant curls....they're so thin, that the edges around tips got pretty distorted, so my Homie(better than me) did some hammer & dolly to get the shape back, then i filed & ground out the tooling marks....then ground both sides with firm, but pliable 8" pad with 40 grit, then 6" D/A w/ 40, 80 & 120 grits. Then wet sanded manual w/ 320, 400, 500, 1200, 1500.
Then a coarse polish with wool wheel, then a finish creme with fresh micro-fibre wrapped on wheel....just finished the S creme a few minutes ago. A couple or so pages back in this thread, Skister posted pix of this blade when i was "00" filing in the tip region.
If You havent seen stuff that i do & are curious, ck Blade's Ego Thread. This Blade i opted for no design, but i take run outs & damaged blades & fashion them into sculptures of different sorts.
Would be killer if one of those McCullough flat sixes were still around.....i just LOVE 2 strokes. Moto Art has one of the Cardinal Drone's....350 mph on the deck, or water, pulling targets. Beech built 2200 of them exclusively for U.S.N. starting in 1955....all Beech mfg, including the baby prop.
