Capt Nick Hauck was a local man, Thunderbird pilot who died in the crash of his T-38. Mom was an RN at a local hospital, and worked with his mother. She was told he could have ejected and saved his own life, but he made the selfless decision to stay with his aircraft and saved the lives of many spectaters at the air show where the Thunderbirds were performing.

Got my pilot’s license (GA) 16 years after going on active duty. Then I got Instrument and multi-engine training and ratings. Then looked at a new career as an airline pilot and said “NO”, I want to be at home with my wife every night! I was super happy that I chose to be a ground pounding civil engineer (mechanical engineer)...home every night. God bless our aviators for making the sacrifice that I wasn’t willing to make!

Now, I am proud that I am the guy who fought and won the Edward’s AFB ATC tower design (the flared hexagon design vs. a blah square brick tower design) and I saved the Edwards Security Police building from not being built, I know that the civil engineering squadron was an awesome unit and did the Flight Test Center proud.

You were surely a great asset to your unit too Ski. Take great pride and pleasure knowing that, my friend, during your retired years. Even if they ever forget you name.
