I thought this was kinda cool. Being a Boom Operator, I can totally relate to this, but for a Pilot in a fighter, I can see bail outs being a real bitch!View attachment 660037 View attachment 660036
My dad once went up in the access compartment of an F4U Corsair and he said it was a lot bigger in the Korean War! Yeah,he was younger&more flexible! All very cool pictures , we have a heritage plane museum in Hamilton Ontario that has quite a few older planes .
It is a very neat place to go to see them .
The KC-135 has a similar setup in the back from Air Refueling. The Boom Operator saying Is, "I have 3 Officers to take me to work, and all I do is lie down and pass gas"! They're finding out that there's Boom's out there having neck & shoulder issues from the current setup, and the AF is looking to modernizing it making it more ergo. Are there any actual planes that were designed this way ?

About maybe 8 years ago at Travis, Boeing had a mock up in a semi trailer which they said was the 4th Gen. video system and that they were testing the 6th Gen video system. I don't like it one bit!!! That's all you need is a major computer failure at a critical phase of flight and you lose all visuals, and have no idea where the receiver is or what they're doing. No thank you, not for me! I want to see what and where the receiver is with my own eyes! Besides, after 28 years and over 7000 hours of doing this on both the 10 & 135, I've had my fill. BTW, I used to sit up on the KC-10, so that's no big deal.Have you seen the setup on the new KC-46? They moved to a fly-by-wire setup and the boom op has an upright seat with the rest of the crew now.
