This is truly a remarkable advancement!

Polywideblock posted some pictures of the MB5 a year ago, I thought I'd add some details.

Martin-Baker, well known for building ejection seats, was designing fighter planes in WWII. This was their best design, the MB5. Able to be easily built with relatively few complex curves in the body, the 2340 hp. Griffon powered contra-rotating props to pulled the plane along at 460 mph. at altitude. Praised for its excellent handling, speed and climb, cockpit visibility, extremely stable landing gear design and ease of access for engine maintenance and change-out, it seems sad that only one was ever built.

It had enough firepower with four 20mm cannons, and the cockpit layout was praised for its layout and controls. All three instrument panels were hinged for easy access to the gauges for servicing.

Although the prototype was flying in May 1944, a whole year before the war ended, the British never ordered it into production. As good as it was, out-flying the Spitfire and Mustang, the interest at the time was turning toward jet propulsion.

And so, after a spectacular post-war flying display at the 1946 Farnborough air show, the airplane disappeared, later being used for gunnery practice. So all that remains are the photos of what could have been a great chapter in aviation history.

Wow, that P-75 looks similar to the MB5, aside from being larger, heavier and slower. But it also didn't enter general production.
